Has the number of email followers disappeared from the statistics?
-
Hi there,
I’m not sure if this is a WordPress problem or just an issue with my site. But all of a sudden when I clicked refesh on my browser, the number of followers via email was wiped off from my statistics and follower count.
Certainly not a major issue but I’d be grateful if someone could check this out please. And admittedly yes, all of them could have just decided to stop following me at the same time!
Thank you kindly
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hey Sean!
This is an issue that we are aware of and currently investigating. Don’t worry, your followers haven’t gone, they just aren’t displaying correctly at present!
Please keep your eye on the following forum post for updates:

Let me know if you have any other questions

Hi Clicky Steve,
Thanks for the link and obviously the problem was rectified fairly quickly after I sent my message.
But on the subject of displaying follower numbers, I’ve noticed recently that there appears to be a significant delay between the stats updating WordPress followers. Again, this may just be on my site but I thought I’d flag it with you just in case.
Is this not an instantaneous update anymore?
Not urgent at all. Thanks

Hey Sean,
No problem. Glad it’s working as expected now.
In terms of your other question, I’m not 100% sure what you mean. However, if you mean that there is a delay in the updating of the stats such as visitor count and views, as seen at http://en.wordpress.com/my-stats/, then that is to be expected. Reports can take a few hours to gather together accurate information across the site, so it isn’t something to worry about. Instantaneous updates can prove a significant use of resources when used across the site, so most providers (including Google Analytics) update the totals at regular intervals.
I hope this clears things up, but if you have any more questions let me know.

Hey Steve,
Thanks for the quick response. Sorry man, I don’t think I explained myself very well.
It wasn’t to do with views or anything. It was specifically to do with fellow WordPress followers. For instance, right now my stats are saying that there are 637 WP.com followers. However this figure has been fixed like that for pretty much the whole day and in the last 2 hours, I’ve received emails to notify me of at least 2 new WP.com followers. But the number tracker still states 637 instead of 639.
Does that make sense?
Of course, I could have lost 2 followers at the same time as gaining 2 but this has been happening a lot very recently.
Previously, WP would update the follower number almost instantaneously I’m sure.
As I said before though, hardly a pressing matter but I just wondered if something had changed or if it was a specific issue with my site.
Thanks as always.

Hey Sean,
That makes sense. Sorry for not catching on straight away!
I can’t speak for what might have happened previously, but to me it sounds like this is most likely related to a delay in the generated emails rather than the WordPress.com follower count itself.
The reason for this is that the latter will update instantaneously as soon as the follower is registered in the database, where as the email will need to be triggered and subject to all sorts of delays at the various mail servers – on both the sending and receiving end. If you have email notifications enabled on a service like Twitter, Facebook, or LinkedIn, you’ll no doubt have noticed that they can often come through substantially later than the actions themselves!
I’ve had a look at your followers, and they are definitely at 637, so for this reason I’m sure that the delay is with the emails. I hope this makes sense!
Let me know if I can do anything else to help.

Hey Steve,
Sorry man. I’m sure you have much more pressing issues to deal with. I totally understand what you’re saying about the emails and subsequent delays but I still think there is a problem with my follower tracking.
I’ve just painstakingly gone through all the registered WP.com followers and noticed the following:
1 – the first 7 followers I ever had have now disappeared completely. Admittedly they could have all decided to stop following me but they were all appearing in the stats literally 2 days ago;
2 – Even without those 7, I still made the total number of WP.com followers to be 640. So assuming that point (1) is in fact an error then the true figure should be 647.This is obviously just a personal issue for me and doesn’t affect the running of my blog or anything like that. Again, I’m sorry to hassle you with something somewhat trivial. But I’d be grateful if you could look into it when you have a moment.
Thanks very much

Hey Sean,
I think I’ve tracked down the problem.
This is a bug with some blogs that means that the follower count is not displaying correctly.
You’ll note that if you go to the following URL that you have 32 pages of subscribers:
https://wordpress.com/my-stats/?blog=50509340&blog_subscribers&unit=1&pagenum=32
However, if we change the 32 to 33, then the missing 7 followers appear:
https://wordpress.com/my-stats/?blog=50509340&blog_subscribers&unit=1&pagenum=33
It’s currently being worked on by the team, so there should hopefully be a resolution on its way. In the meantime though, at least they are still there – just hidden! :)
Let me know if there’s anything else I can do just now,
Best,

Cool, thanks for the update Steve and sorry again for being a bit of a pain.
It actually looked liked everything was back to normal yesterday but the same thing is happening again. Not to worry though. Like you said, they’re just hidden (hopefully haha).
I’ll just sit tight until it’s resolved. Rather ominously, it’s currently showing up as 657 but I actually make it 666!
Thanks again man.

Hi Steve,
Just to let you know that the problem is still persisting.
When new WP users subscribe, the system is still failing to reflect them in the statistics. And as has happened previously, subscribers are now being hidden rather than a new page being created to log those new users in full.
Thanks

Hey Sean,
Thanks for the update. Our developers are aware of the issue, and will hopefully have a fix soon, although I’m afraid I can’t give a timescale at the minute.
Thanks,
