Has there been a change in domain name policy?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello. Did you recently change it so that all wordpress URLs end in wordpress.com? The reason I ask is because our site used to be accessed through the URLs floridafolkloresociety.com and floridafolkloresociety.org, but now these URLs do not lead to the page. Any ideas? Thanks.

    If you allowed your two domain mapping upgrades to expire that could explain the chnage in URL.

    There is no domain mapping upgrade for floridafolkloresociety.com.
    There is no domain mapping upgrade for floridafolkloresociety.org.

    floridafolkloresociety.com and floridafolkloresociety.org

    Both domains are registered with Godaddy and the name servers are pointing to Godaddy –

    http://floridafolkloresociety.wordpress.com/ – only has a few Posts

    I was not able to find any cache of floridafolkloresociety.com and floridafolkloresociety.org in Google –

    Did you use some sort of forward and mask in the past?

    @auxclass
    Forwarding and masking was my guess too and it was I who posted that tag in the sidebar.

    @TT – I saw the tag – that there is no cache of the domain names tells me that the names were probably not attached to a web site – how it was done – not sure and don’t know how to check that part –

    There are several other web sites that are candidates to be on the receiving end of a forward or forward and mask

    Maybe the extra info will help someone

  • Hi there, we’ve verified that neither floridafolkloresociety.com nor floridafolkloresociety.org is currently registered through WordPress.com nor is either one mapped to a site on WordPress.com through a domain mapping upgrade.

    As auxclass and timethief mentioned earlier, it’s possible that you once had those domains forwarded to your WordPress.com site at GoDaddy’s end, using a forwarding/masking option. Those methods aren’t supported technically on our end, so they aren’t a reliable means of using a custom domain with your WordPress.com site. We recommend purchasing a domain mapping upgrade – here’s our guide to mapping an existing domain.

    Just let me know if you need further help.
