Has this person hacked into my blog account?

  • Unknown's avatar

Over the past few weeks I’ve noticed that another blogger who has a Worpress.com account, has been following the exact same blogs I follow. Some of them are blogs which I’ve followed for a while, but others are blogs which I’ve only just followed.

She ‘advertises’ the blogs she follows in a list, on the right hand side widget bar.
I, however, don’t advertise the blogs I follow, apart from a small handful which I have the links to in my widget bar also.

At first I thought it was just a coincidence that she was following blogs I follow – even though I didn’t think there were her sort of thing.

However … I began to notice that if I followed someone new, that new blog would appear on her list.

So today … having a little [too much] time on my hands, I went in search of, and found, some blogs that I wouldn’t ever normally follow …. and I added first one …. and then a couple of minutes later, I visited this bloggers blog and that same blog that I’d just followed appeared on her list of blogs she follows.

Then I added another blog to my list … and within moments it appeared on her list.
I added a third. This too appeared on her list – this time within seconds.

In total I added 5 newly followed blogs, and all of these newly followed blogs appeared virtually instantly on her blog site.

I also tried removing one of the blogs that I’d followed to see what happened. After a few minutes, that blog was removed from the list on her blog.

How has she done this? How has she linked some parts of her blog to my blog, and ….
what can I do to stop it?

It feels creepy, really uncomfortable and almost like being stalked.

Can you please help with this?
    Many thanks. ~ Cobs.

  • Hi there,

No one has hacked your site. This is a problem with the Blogs I Follow widget.

At one point there was a bug with the widget where it will show you your own followed blogs if you view it on a site instead of the site owner’s followed blogs.

This has long since been fixed, but a site owner needs to remove and re-add the widget on their site for the fix to be applied, and it just sounds like this site’s owner has not did that, probably because they have not noticed this issue as they would be seeing the correct sites listed when looking at the widget on their own site. You might want to drop them a comment to let them know about this so they can fix it.

    Hello Kokkieh.
    Many thanks for your response.
I’m so happy to hear that my blog details haven’t been hacked into and that this weird Blogs Followed list is simply a bug on her site and that others reading her site will be seeing their own followed blog sites list in the same way as I can read mine.

It was a totally freaky experience when I saw how quickly blog sites I followed were being added to her list.

All explained now, and I’m happy.

Many many thanks for your help. ~ Cobs. :D
