Has WP changed recently?

Did wordpress change in the past year? I don’t remember having to pay $300/year to use Google’s free Analytics tools. And I also recall having more control over my theme. Is this the new normal? Should I find another option to host my blog because a service shouldn’t become less functional as time goes on. Don’t they host ads on my page to generate revenue anyway?

There is no alternative when it comes to wordpress.COM hosted blogs. You either purchase the Business upgrade for $299 US per year or you don’t have access to Google Analytics. http://en.blog.wordpress.com/2015/01/29/google-analytics-for-wordpress-com-business-sites/

I believe you are confusing wordpress.com hosted sites and wordpress.org software installs on paid hosting.
WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG are completely separate and have different username accounts, logins, features, run different versions of some themes with the same names, and have separate support documentation and separate support forums.
