  I know, it’s really confusing! This guide helped me a lot:

  https://wordpress.com/support/com-vs-org/

  When you register with WordPress.com, they give you a free domain. You can ask if there’s anything you can do to get a cheaper plan if you already have a domain. No harm in asking!
