Have I completed all the steps for moving from WordPress.com to WordPress.org

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

I just finished following the info here on WordPress.com for moving from my blog here to a WordPress.org. I’ve exported and imported my blog content successfully myself. I recently purchased a domain however with WordPress.com and am aware that I can’t move it anywhere until after 60 days, but I did change the name servers. So now that those are changed – do I leave my domain on “primary” on the dashboard? And how will I know my WordPress.com site will be hidden so it won’t interfere with my WordPress.org site?

    Thanks!

    Rachel

Hi again – I’m still waiting on a reply for this question – my domain is still directing to my wordpress.com site even though I’ve changed the nameservers and set the new wordpress.org site as my primary blog. Is this normal behavior? How do I hide my wordpress.com site?

    Hi there,

If you have changed the nameservers for the domain which is registered here at WordPress.com to point to another site that domain will now resolve to the hosting which you have set up there.

If you keep that domain as the primary for your WordPress.com site, you are in effect hiding your WordPress.com site, as there will be no way for anyone to see your original content (since anyone who visits rachievee.wordpress.com will be forwarded to rachievee.com, which now pulls up your third party hosting).

So in short, your WordPress.com site is now effectively hidden! FYI, if you ever want to manage it, you’ll just need to log directly in to WordPress.com and navigate to your dashboard.

    Hi,

    Thanks so much for answering.

    So in short:

Set up nameservers as specified by my new hosting
Keep my wordpress.com domain set as primary domain

And that’s all? So if it’s still not working, it’s because DNS still hasn’t taken full effect? It’s been maybe 24 hours – I hear it can take up to 72.

    Thanks!

That is correct on all counts, though you might just need to clear the cache on your browser:

I just took a look and the site that comes up when I go to rachievee.com is WordPress, but is definitely not hosted with us. So it is definitely working!

Weird – I’m still seeing wordpress.com even in Incognito – I’ll give it another day. Thanks!

Not a problem. Hope it clears up for you soon. :)
