Have I reached the limit of the subscription list export file?

Have I reached the limit of the subscription list export file again? I’m following aspermama.wordpress.com but it’s not listed in the latest export file (and seems to have been dropped from the end of the file. See https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/unfollow-a-large-number-of-blogs/page/3/#post-3393138 for reference.)

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

The export file can contain up to 2500 records, and you’re currently following 2507 sites in the Reader, so you have hit the limits again.

We’re not able to adjust that limit again, so unless you unfollow some sites, your subscription export won’t contain all sites you’re following going forward.

My WordPress reader shows 2507 followed sites but the exported file only lists 2430 (with 7 sites dropped from the end of previously exported files). Why is that?

  • My best guess is that things can start to break at those upper limits, but if you’d like we can try to find more info.

Can you clarify whether the export file has been bigger than 2430 before, and if so when did it drop?

No, it has never been bigger than 2430.
Whenever I export my followed sites I always compare it with the previous export file (using ExamDiff). Newly-followed sites get added at the top, with isolated changes within the file when a site changes its title or URL. This is the first time since last November that sites have been deleted from the end.
If a site goes private it gets removed from the exported list then gets added back in if/when it goes public again, so WordPress is still remembering them. Could it be that the difference between 2430 and 2500 is due to sites WordPress is remembering but not exporting because they’re private or otherwise temporarily disabled?

  • Possibly so: would you happen to know at least one of the sites that is gone or private? And if so, when you remove it do you get another item on the next export?

    autieyes.home.blog. No.

Correction: autieyes.home.blog was removed from the exported list after it went private. I did not try to unsubscribe because I want WordPress to tell me if it goes public, which I wouldn’t be able to do if I unsubscribed because WordPress will not let me subscribe to a private blog.
I have unsubscribed to enough blogs to put myself under the 2500 limit, so all my followed sites currently appear in my exported list.

  • I have unsubscribed to enough blogs to put myself under the 2500 limit, so all my followed sites currently appear in my exported list.

Okay, in that case the missing sites from the export file are definitely ones that have been deleted or set to private since you followed them.

The way the export works here, is that it goes down the sites you subscribe, and stops when it reaches 2500. And only at that point does it then remove private/deleted sites. That’s how you’re getting an export file containing fewer than 2500 records, but not containing all the sites you follow – any sites beyond 2500 will be truncated regardless of whether or not the first 2500 includes sites that cannot be included in the final export.
