Have I really used up 76% of space allowed?

  • Unknown's avatar

My dashboard says I have used 76% of the MB space allowed. I believe I have paid for a further year and was expecting this figure to change when the new year started. Can you help me to clarify my position? Am I going to run out of space soon? Have I paid for additional space? Do I need to open a different blog? Do I need to pay for an upgrade? Am I mistaken over whether I have renewed my subscription? Do I need to stop posting so many photographs? etc etc

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • That is very possible. You appear to be burning through your storage space by uploading unnecessarily large images. I downloaded an image at random from your blog and it weighs in at 6000×4000 pixels and a whopping 6Mb. That’s huge. Meanwhile, the maximum size your blog can display is 960 pixels wide (and most pc screens can’t display over 1600 pixels in any case). Say you resize the image to 1200 pixels wide (bigger than you need, but that’s around the maximum I’ve seen for WordPress.com themes) you end up with a file size of only 435kb. At file size you could upload thirteen to fourteen images to use the same amount of space you currently use with one image.

My suggestion is to start optimising your new images immediately by resizing them BEFORE you upload them to your blog. That will immediately extend the lifetime of your remaining storage space. You could also start working through all your old posts and replacing existing images with optimised ones. Don’t resize them inside the media library as that won’t reduce the file size at all.

Rather, you’ll have to resize the image offline using photo editing software (Picasa’s export function works well enough for this). Next, open the post for editing. Click on the image and click on the pencil icon. Look for the button that says “Replace image” and replace it with the smaller image (upload it as you normally would when inserting images). Afterwards, go to your media library and delete the old, big image. It’s hard work, so it might just be easier to leave the old images as is, optimise from now on and then buy the space upgrade when you finally do run out.

Another way to reduce your image file size is http://www.jpegmini.com/
See here for more info on optimising your images: http://en.support.wordpress.com/media/image-optimization/
    http://gammagirl.wordpress.com/2012/06/06/new-image-rotation-and-scrunching-reloaded/

You get 3Gb free media storage with your blog that never expires. You can increase that by buying a space upgrade that needs to be renewed every year, but if you optimise your images first you’ll be able to blog for years before ever needing to buy a space upgrade. http://en.support.wordpress.com/space-upgrade/

Also consider that these large image files make your site load very slowly, so using optimised images should also help for that.

Thank you very much. I have managed to follow this advice and think I am well on the way to solving the problem thanks to you. Could you please tell me how I can change the name of my blog fro simonjohnsonofclowne to something a little more anonymous. I have been given this information before but lost it when my old email account expired.

  • I’m glad I could help :)

Your blog’s title that displays when you view the blog can be changed under Settings ->General in the dashboard.

If you’re speaking of the address, instructions to change your blog URL are found in this support doc: http://en.support.wordpress.com/changing-blog-address/

Please make sure you read the support doc and all instructions and warnings carefully as this process cannot be reversed.

When prompted whether you’d like to keep the old URL or delete it, consider keeping it as deleted URLs can never be recovered: http://en.support.wordpress.com/recycling-blog-names/

Rather, set the old address to private, and then you can either use it as a test blog to try out new themes and widgets, etc., or you can use it as a backup to your regular blog by periodically importing content to it. http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/

As part of the process you’ll also have the option to change your username to match the new address. Note that if you do this your current username will cease to exist and you won’t later be able to go back to it. If you prefer, you can also keep your username what it is and simply change your display name (what will appear next to comments – on the forum it will still be the actual username that appears). Instructions to do that can be found here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/change-your-username/

To automatically redirect visitors from the old address to the new one you’ll need to buy the Site Redirect upgrade: http://en.support.wordpress.com/site-redirect/ You don’t have to buy this, but if you don’t people who had your old address bookmarked won’t be able to find it, and any links to your old address on other sites will no longer work, so if your blog has been around for a while it is recommended.
