Have posts been lost in the past minutes?

    Second Request:

Folks, as stated before, backups are made of each and every blog. Even the spammers get their blogs backed up. Your blog is not lost. Please kindly remember that. This is the internet. Stuff like this happens all the time. (Between system admins, we call it a backhoe problem. Someone looses their internet connection due to a backhoe taking out a wire by mistake.) As stated, backups are made on a regular basis. Us oldtimes here are pretty much used to stuff like this because it happens on occasion and we have come out of it fine.

Now please, a person plea. Stop pretending you’re all AOL users and please stop posting “Me too’s” all over the place.

And to those who brag about other sites like Blogger being up 100% of the time, all I have to say is “Yeah, right” and go digging for that thread about how many times Blogger has been taking off line due to DoS allacks themselves.

I’ve been watching this thread with interest and while I’ve lost two years “work”, I can’t say that I’m as bothered as everyone else seems to be.

Blogging is recording ephemera – passing moments and events that quickly fade – so it’s rather apt that my blog has itself proved to be ephemeral.

If it comes back, well, great and if it doesn’t, well, it will be interesting deciding whether to start with a clean slate or try to reconstruct from intermittent back-ups and memories. Maybe I could ask my regulars to re-write it from their memories?

I suspect I’d feel the same if I was paying for the blog space, although I might want to complain a little. As it is, I’m sure the WordPress team are working their butts off to restore our collective works but as for me, I’m off to feed my pigs and tuck my chickens in for the night…

  • Unknown's avatar

Stonehead, not sure why you’re “fanning the flames” by stating that your work is lost as they do keep backups. Its been stated many times that they do.

  • Unknown's avatar

Hey, not fanning the flames – just being philosophical! I just don’t worry about these things.

  • Unknown's avatar

*smile* another blog is gone… for every door that has been closed to us there’S another one which has been opened. We just stare too long at the closed one to see our new opportunities…
I want my blog back though, but I’m sure u guys will make it, will u?:)

  • Unknown's avatar

um, drmike, the target audience of wp.com is not entirely dissimilar to that of AOL… Besides, we’re all bloggers. Therefore, the need to make entirely pointless and uninformative posts is deep within us.

If you go all wp.org on us and start shutting everyone down, levels of frustration will increase exponentially and conspiracy theories start to circulate about how the admins don’t want this discussed. Trust me.

p.s. that is not a threat, btw. I know your intentions are entirely honorable ;)

  • Unknown's avatar

Don’t mean to cause you any more frustration, drmike, but what exactly caused the server outrage?

I’m just curious, and I am sure I am speaking for others as well.

  • Unknown's avatar

I know you guys got backups and am really glad that you do, but is there a timeframe you folks got in mind for when the network and reverts will be made — everything running back to normal again?

    thanks,
    Angelo (googlesworld.wordpress.com)

It’d be nice if there’s Backup button to download all blogs and pages and drafts, or I’ll have to start doing it myself using something like web reaper.

I blog because I have a terrible memory. I’m just writing down my life before I forget it, as if someone cares–sometimes not even myself :)

Keep up the good work guys, and I’m willing paypal some cash to buy your sys admins some beer once this is over…

Interesting typo? – gave me a good laugh, thanks!

“I suspect I’d feel the same if I was paying for the blog space, although I might want to complain a little”

That’s a wonderful argument. Would even be funny if it weren’t for its tediousness.

Stonehead, your blog might mean nothing but ephemereal stuff to you but for others it might mean more. Some share their work or their passion, have regular visitors, and sometime create bonds via blogging, others might even consider that WordPress.com is (was) a perfect tool for people with no or little expertise and as the FAQ clearly stated that WP would soon offer paid services and add-ons, maybe some thought it was indeed the perfect place for a pet project.

I’m in charge of the blog here but I’m not the only one working on it and for it. And to promote it, we HIRED and PAID a company to get it boosted on bots and search engines and what people notice is the wordpress.com at the end of the URL and that’s good for WP if the blog looks good and is available. To display pictures, we’ve paid for a p-base account. Because we believe WP is a REMARKABLE TOOL when it works, we DONATE and we donate much more than what it would cost if we paid a monthly subscription.

We’re not expecting any form of privilege in a community based on volunteer work and OpenSource but frankly the “don’t complain it’s free” stuff is getting on many people’s nerves, not just mine.

Here’s a car, son, breaks down often but hey, it’s free. Result: after some time, the guy dumps the car and tries another one. How many incidents like this before disappointed people move away from WP ? The efforts and the kindness of (most) people in charge is not at stake, but a free service that doesn’t work is hardly a service.

mine are missing as well ALL of them will they be back???
i hope so i have some priceless replies!

Classic – “if you go all wp.org on us” !

I agree, plus having the forums available so we can post concerns is really great – no matter the ‘me too’ count. It adds to the feeling/sense of community. Also goes a long way toward ‘keeping the restless natives’ at bay. :)

  • Unknown's avatar

Can someone tell me about how long does it take for things to get back to normal? Days? Weeks? Months?
*The outage is fine with me since this is a free service.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hey,

give a break word wordpress… as they said, things like this happens on the internet. WordPress is the best!

    let’s keep on blogging!

  • Unknown's avatar

    If only we could! *laugh*

  • Unknown's avatar

Ok, I´ve read again this post, but I repeat my question.
    You´ll restore it?
If we haven´t got a back up of our db, we lost it??

  • Unknown's avatar

kenkccc: “I uploaded an mp3 file last night (New York 16th April, 2006 12:15 a.m.). It’s still there

pictures (and all other post attachments) are should be intact since they’re static, stored as a regular files in the website’s box filesystem.

and this is a good news: since there’s an access to them, it means (at least) there is no major *hardware* fault (harddisk) or filesystem issues.

posts’ content, links, categories and other meta-data, in contrary, is contained in the database (which is probably out of sync/corrupt/whatever) and dynamically generated each time one’s accesing any blog’s page.

so, apparently, there’s some price of not having “a rebuilding step in these days“.

  • Unknown's avatar

I shan’t add a me too line, as its quite obvious that my blog is currently ‘lost’ just like everyone elses, but I take faith that backups exist. Anyways just to say that now my admin screen has gone, which has been available during the ‘glitch’. I’ll try and be an optimist and assume that means something is being done, that or the Easter bunny on acid that’s eaten the bit of the server(s) containing our blog posts has now started on seconds/desert eating another part of the server.
