Have WordPress.org site…can I cancel my WordPress.com site?

  • Unknown's avatar

    I started off with a WordPress.com site, http://www.deborahrutter.wordpress.com

I switched my site to WordPress.org, and have my domain name hosted via HostMonster. The new site is: http://www.deborahrutter.com

I used the same email address for both, but the .com site is still coming up on search engines, so since I don’t post there anymore, I want to delete it. The big WARNING message had me a little worried…can I cancel the .com site with no effect to my .org site?

    Thanks,
    Deborah

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

If your com site is coming up in searches, why not leave it with one last “I’ve Moved!” post and point it to the new site? It doesn’t cost you anything.

I don’t want this site to come up at all (deborahrutter.wordpress.com). I used it as an experiment, and now want it gone…can I delete it if I have used my .org site with the same email address?

Yes you can delete the blog or make it private so it isn’t crawled and use it as a backup site by periodically exporting content out of the wordpress org blog and importing it into the private wordpress.com blog. If you wish to use the wordpress stats plugin on your wordpress.org blog you will need to have a wordpress.com account – accounts here are not deleted. Also note that any page that returns a 404 can be deleted from Google’s cache http://onecoolsite.wordpress.com/2008/03/21/how-to-remove-data-from-googles-cache/

timethief: GREAT idea about a back-up location! Genuis. I have two blogs, one of which I will keep (deborahrutter.wp) and the other I’d like to can (therealnorthdeering.wp), but when I go to SETTINGS>Delete Blog, I can separate the two…it only gives me the delete option for deborahrutter.wp…What to do?

And I made deborahrutter.wp private a few days ago, but when I type in the URL (www.deborahrutter.wordpress.com) it still comes up as viable. Suggestions? I LOVE the WordPress platform which is why I moved to .ORG, but I really want these older references disappeared.

That’s happening because you are logged in. This blog has been set to private and if you log out of wordpress.com you can confirm that. I just did that myself (Note there is no “www”) http://deborahrutter.wordpress.com/

Our email addresses we register here with are unique identifiers. The email address you were logged into wordpress.com when you created that blog is the relevant one. If you did not use two different email addresses then you will have to contact Staff to have the other blog deleted. However, before you do that understand that once deleted that name and URL can never be used again. I have found that I always need a test blog to try new things out in before I attempt changes to my blog. :) http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact/
