Have WP Monkeys Broken Things?

  • Unknown's avatar

Why is it that when I look at older posts that I’ve done, I find that pics I’ve used have popped out of their frames and overlap other page items? They were okay when I inserted them. It seems to usually be the setting for the largest size, but it isn’t always. I also look for ‘centered’, for that was the cause of the problem one time, as someone here pointed out. But now I look for that and I can say that that isn’t always the cause.

Post links to examples please and then type modlook into the sidebar tags on this threadfor Staff help.

Actually, I just now checked an old post that I saw had the above problem. I see that the problem I thought I had corrected by having the pic size at large rather than full isn’t corrected. The thing is, It looked fine when I did the preview. So I go off figuring that everything’s okay and it isn’t. Damn! What good is the preview if the system is going to play those kinds of tricks on me?

Sorry. I meant to link to the post. Here it is: https://arrby.wordpress.com/2012/06/01/lazy/

    @ arrby,

The two embedded images on the post https://arrby.wordpress.com/2012/06/01/lazy/ look fine, and don’t overlap text or any other page content. Could you post a screen shot of what you are seeing?

  • Unknown's avatar

I didn’t think to take a screen shot. Not too bright huh? The next time I see the problem, I’ll do that. The funny thing is, I returned and saw it. And then closed the page and when I opened it again, the problem was gone. Which makes me wonder about what WP has on it’s servers. I’ve see ‘that’ before. Not long ago, I previewed or viewed (forget exactly) and saw a whole page missing from a 3 page Page. I freaked. All the edits I had done, hours and hours, were suddenly gone. And I know I had been saving them. I was frantic. I closed the page, still frantic and just trying to catch my breath. Then I opened it again, and my missing page showed up. I can think of only reason I would see that. It’s on WP’s servers and being dished up for some reason. It’s unsettling.

Well, That didn’t take long. The very next post I examined on my blog showed the same bloated image problem. See: https://app.box.com/s/06nmeqc04n5omw3tduddapideqrkgwcx

    The post is here: https://arrby.wordpress.com/2012/05/08/fascist-america-have-we-finally-turned-the-corner/

I had a look at the coding and it’s centered, so that isn’t the problem.

Timethief: Thanks. I’ll be sure to add ‘modlook’ in the tag box of my submissions in the future. Does that apply when you’re just asking a simple question? I thought that that was what I was doing. Mind you, It turns out that my problem is serious, ergo…

  • Unknown's avatar

I see that problem. I expect it is a theme bug if you’re inserting them Large size and centered and it doesn’t do that. Add “modlook” because if it’s a theme bug, staff will have to fix it.

Before you do, can you confirm on the dashboard Settings->Writing page you have selected “WordPress should correct invalidly nested XHTML”? If you haven’t, do so now. Then edit that post: switch it to Private and back to Public, or make any simple change and Update. See if that fixes it.

Yes, the image displays the just as your screen shot illustrates. Is there any chance you might have a stray div tag or an unclosed tag of some kind in the post? See the support page HTML Troubleshooting. That may not be the problem but it’s all I can think of at the moment. I’ll tag the topic for Staff attention.

Sorry, raincoaster. I hadn’t updated for a few minutes.

  • Unknown's avatar

Raincoaster: Yes, it’s checked. That one I dealt with years ago. Thanks. I’m seeing the bursting images now all the time. I looked at another post, selecting it from posts that visitors to my blog today looked at, and I see the same problem. The “Who Is Arrby?” Page is that post.

No worries, all correct responses are welcome.

I really don’t know coding, so I don’t do it. But coding consists of characters and I do tend to make lines out of characters. Rather than enclose all of my quotes in quotation marks, for example, I’ll just enclose them with a line that might look like this:

    ===========+–
    blah, blah, blah. Mumble, mumble.

    Mumble, blah, mumble

    blah, blah
    –+==============

I don’t do that for a single short sentence or two, but I do it often. I did run into trouble once using < and >, which I now avoid.

  • Unknown's avatar

I should have said that I ran into trouble using the < and > characters to make lines (adding them at the end of dashes), after I had come to the forum about it and someone clued me in.

Answer the question about the XHTML setting. Copy/paste can cause this problem; you don’t need to be a coder. Fix that setting, edit the post, and see if that fixes it.

Raincoaster: See my above post of 10:26pm. I am cooperating. It’s in my best interest. ;-)

While I’m here, I should add that this problem has only exploded just now, over the last day or two. And I’m doing the same things I’ve done for years now.

    Yes.

Okay, do this: go to your dashboard Posts page, and using the Bulk Editor, select all the posts. Set them to Private. Then set them back to Public. Do this for ALL your posts. That should get the HTML error wherever it is. You don’t seem to have used any Text Widgets, but if you have, edit the text widget too, and then Save.

That will force the fix to take effect everywhere on your blog, if you do it to all the posts and any text widgets.

  • Unknown's avatar

Okay. (I don’t know what a text widget is, so I guess I’m not using one.) I’ll report back.

  • Unknown's avatar

Before I click myself into hell, How do I change everything to private and then back to public? I certainly see the ‘bulk’ button and can easily select everything. But I don’t see a ‘private’ and ‘public’ tab or button.
