Having trouble migrating to .org and changing name servers for external host
-
Hi there,
I set up my wordpress site as a .com and purchased the domain name isupportyoumovement.com. I wanted extra functionality so started the process of migrating to a .org following internet recommendations. I purchased external hosting at Siteground and transferred the domain to them. I then followed the instructions in this article: http://www.wpbeginner.com/wp-tutorials/how-to-properly-move-your-blog-from-wordpress-com-to-wordpress-org/ However, when I tried the export and import process, it just duplicated what I had in WordPress and I had no extra functionality.
I tried to change the name servers in WordPress but I couldn’t (kept saying ‘cannot update name servers’), so I asked for help from the Siteground team who said they updated the servers.
Current status is that I am getting an error page when I search for my website, nobody else seems to be able to see it and I still do not have the functionality I would like. I am a beginner, with no coding skills so have no idea how to fix this.
I want to be able to install plugins and edit widgets etc WITHOUT changing my website name from http://www.isupportyoumovement.com
If anyone can help I would be greatly appreciative :)
Erin

Hi Erin!
If the new site looks like the one you have here at WordPress.com, then you successfully transferred your site – congratulations! The domain transfer was successful, according to a whois lookup:Name Server NS1.UK25.SITEGROUND.EU
Name Server NS2.UK25.SITEGROUND.EUYou can add all the plugins you want to the Siteground installation. You can find many many plugins by going to:
https://wordpress.org/plugins/ and even more if you do a web search for plugins. So at this point, you have done all you can as far as WordPress.COM is concerned, beyond perhaps shutting down your site here. The support network you need to be asking at from now on is:
https://wordpress.ORG/support/Notice the change from .COM to .ORG You are now working in a much different environment than you were. Your new installation is what we call self hosted, or sometimes a WordPress.ORG site. There are many differences from what you were working with and the following document explains many of them:

Hi there,
I’m a little lost. I want to transfer my domain name from WordPress to another host. But they require a code
So I request Transfer Code from WordPress, and they say they send it, but I receive nothing! it’s been 4 days trying now. I check my spam, all my emails, I make sure I have the right email in my WordPress admin page.
Everything is fine, but no email. Has anyone else experienced this? Any idea why it’s happening?
I can’t tranfer domains, now, seem to be lost in limbo.
thanks very much. -
Hello again!
A search on whois isupportyoumovement.com at ICANN.Org (the people who control domain names) gives this result: {edited for brevity}Raw WHOIS Record
Domain Name: ISUPPORTYOUMOVEMENT.COM
Domain ID: 2093188383_DOMAIN_COM-VRSN
Registrar WHOIS Server: whois.tucows.com
Registrar URL: http://tucowsdomains.com
Updated Date: 2017-04-05T19:27:52Z
Creation Date: 2017-01-26T10:37:42Z
Registrar Registration Expiration Date: 2019-01-26T10:37:42Z
Registrar: TUCOWS, INC.
Reseller: SiteGround Hosting Ltd.
Domain Status: ok https://icann.org/epp#ok
Name Server: NS1.UK25.SITEGROUND.EU
Name Server: NS2.UK25.SITEGROUND.EU
DNSSEC: unsigned
URL of the ICANN WHOIS Data Problem Reporting System: http://wdprs.internic.net/
>>> Last update of WHOIS database: 2017-04-05T19:27:52Z <<<This tells us that the name now points to Siteground, a hosting provider. When i go to http://isupportyoumovement.com/, at the bottom of the page, i see
Proudly powered by WordPress
Which tells me that the WordPress installation i am looking at is NOT hosted at WordPress.com!
So everything is as it should be! Your domain points to your new self-hosted page, you are using a WordPress.ORG version of the WordPress software, and life is good. Now you can change/modify/enhance your site all you want.
You might want to make a change to your site here at WordPress.COM like change the featured photo so you can tell them apart at a glance.
And, as i said in my last reply, at this point your questions should now go to https://wordpress.ORG/support/ because they have the experience and know how to help you with your self-hosted site.
best,
dave
