having trouble with links/blogroll

I’ve read most of the threads pertaining to blogrolls, but I’m still confused and feeling like quite the dolt.

I understand there’s no blogroll widget, and I understand how to add URLs to my blogroll. Then (I think?) they will display when I activate the links widget?

I found this in a troubleshooting thread and it confused me further.

“The links widget does not have the icon with blue lines on the right side of it because it does not require configuration. If you have not deleted the DEFAULT category “blogroll” from your categories then following the instructions will result in it appearing in your sidebar. If however you have eliminated the DEFAULT blogroll category and not replaced it with another DEFAULT category the blogroll of links will not appear.”

    Huh?

Ideally I would like an alphabetized blogroll, with groups of links separated by blank lines, but not in named categories. Example:

    a link
    a link
    a link

    b link
    b link

    c link
    c link
    c link

    d link

    and so on.

Can I do this? If so, can you give me step by step directions?

I can tell that the holiday thing just isn’t getting through to you. Mark is in the UK and it’s midnight there.
You enter links in your Blogroll at the admin section of your blog assigning them each to a category. Blogroll is the default category for your links. When you place the Links widget in your sidebar the links you entered into your Blogroll of links will be displayed alphabetically in accord with the assigned category.

You cannot change this. It’s coded that way and we cannot edit our templates at wordpress. com because we are all on a shared multi-user blogging platform. Also the widgets are hard coded you cannot edit them and create the blank lines you desire between them.
If you are accustomed to hacking your template there are other choices you can make. This will will explain the limitations on editing templates at wordpress.com as well as alternatives.

Geez, sorry. I wasn’t expecting an answer right away. I thought anyone could reply at his or her own convenience. Isn’t that the point of a forum?

The evening of Dec 26 isn’t a holiday for me. Sorry.

I’m accustomed to it, but it’s not necessary. I only signed up with WordPress 2 days ago and I’m still learning. I’m not looking for alternatives, just trying to learn what is and is not possible.

    Thanks.

Ahhhh … now I get it. I’ll bet you didn’t notice the pink sticky thread at the head of the forum http://wordpress.com/forums/topic.php?id=6223&replies=2

Yes of course you’re right. However, a question of this kind doesn’t need an answer from staff. It’s your fellow bloggers like me who would answer it and most are enjoying Boxing Day at home with friends and family. Also, truth be told, we actually take pride in having a faster turn-around on forum answers at wordpress.com than most forums do. I apologize. Sheesh I’m sorry for being a grump … :(

I did notice it, and I read it. Not knowing when anyone would be around, I figured I’d post when it was convenient for me. Thanks for your apology. Have a nice night.
