Having .wordpress. in your address is compulsory right, for free blogs?

I was reading this help article about mistake newbies make and it said this…
1. Installing WordPress in a Sub Folder Called “WordPress”
The WordPress zip file places all core files in a folder entitled “WordPress. Beginners make the mistake of simply uploading this folder to their website using FTP rather than uploading the files and folders contained within the folder. This results in their website being located at http://www.website.com/wordpress rather than http://www.website.com.
As I understood it, the word “wordpress” is always going to be in your blog address unless you buy your own site, isn’t it?
I didn’t really understand what he meant about downloading wordpress to a folder, I’ve no idea if I did that or not, hence the question about the “wordpress” bit in my address, that this guy said was a no no.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

If you are “googling” around for information about WordPress, let me dissuade you right at the outset.
WordPress comes in a couple of flavors: WordPress, the standalone software, and WordPress.com, which is the hosted version and where we are. When you use search engines to find information, they will give you results also for the standalone version of the WordPress software which most likely won’t have a thing to do with your WordPress.com website.
Here’s more about the differences between the flavors: http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
If your site is hosted by WordPress.com (which confessionsofabackcountrystalker.wordpress.com is), the first place you should look for information is our Support site http://en.support.wordpress.com/
As far as having “wordpress” in your site address, all free sites hosted on WordPress.com are subdomains of wordpress.com. You can buy an upgrade which will let you use your own domain name here, but your site is still hosted by WordPress.com. Here’s more on that: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/
Let us know if you need any more info.

Thanks for your reply.
Yes looks like I fell for that old trick again! The page I was reading didn’t specify which wordpress it was, so I guess it was for the .org version. When I google search blog stuff I always include “wordpress.com” in my search in hope of singling it out. I just find it easier to search through google than on here.

The search on the Support site itself is actually pretty good. It’s my “go to” choice. Did a whole post about it: http://wpcommaven.wordpress.com/2013/09/24/use-the-support-search-luke/

I’m sure it is, it’s more just a reflection of my ineptness on this site that I prefer google search. Thanks for the link to your post, will have a look.
