Having WordPress transferring my domain

  • Unknown's avatar

I have read that for either $13 or $18 WordPress will transfer my domain to WordPress. I am currently hosted by BlueHost and my domain name (dowlphin.com) is help by WildWestDomains. I am having trouble with doing it myself because Bluehost needs a EPP authorisation from WWD but I don’t know my username and password at WWD so they won’t give me an EPP authorisation. Catch22 between a rock and a hard place. Can yo help/

  • Howdy,

Your domain is actually registered with us at WordPress.com (WWD is our domain provider, so we provide all support for it while they maintain the technical infrastructure).

We have instructions on how to transfer your domain to a new registrar at Transfer a Domain to Another Registrar. Please note that you have private registration enabled, so be sure to follow that part of the instructions (commonly overlooked by folks).

There is no charge from WordPress.com to transfer the domain, but you’ll pay for a year’s renewal at BlueHost for the transfer at the time of the transfer.

If you have any questions, please let me know. Thanks!

I am quite confused by what is going on here because it seems that I have own two products and it seems that they are getting mixed up and I can’t work out which is which.

Here is the confusion. When I go to my Dashboard to try to redo my blog, I see no changes on Dowlphin.com. I suspect that one of them is in the WordPress.org and the other is in the WordPress.com and I can’t work out which is which and am afraid to “experiment” by making change changes becuase I reckon I could end up losing everyting.

What I want to do is to bring them together so that when I work on the Dashboard, the result will be seen on dowlphin.com. This is what I expected would happen when I pad my $99, but…. ?

Now I got an email from Pam K who said “Hi Jack, I have removed the privacy and lock on your domain, and had the EPP code mailed to you. You should be able to proceed with your transfer now.

Given you have offered to transfer the domain at no charge, could you please help me out here.

    Thanks.

    Jack

    Thanks.

  • Hi Jack,

Your ticket that Pam answered wasn’t connected to your account (not sent by the e-mail address on this account it seems), so I don’t see it.

What I’m seeing now at http://www.dowlphin.com/ is a site not on WordPress.com (so any changes made to it via WordPress.com or http://dowlphin.wordpress.com/wp-admin/ have no impact on your site).

To change your site, you need to visit http://dowlphin.com/wp-admin/ If the login looks like this: https://cloudup.com/cctSGnbsEFd (notice the W logo with “WordPress” spelled out), you’re in the right place. If it takes you to http://dowlphin.wordpress.com/wp-admin/ , then the nameserver changes that you made earlier haven’t reached your computer yet (which is normal; it takes a number of hours for the changes to be effective Internet-wide).

When moving to Bluehost, the dashboard of your site moved to your own hosting account and isn’t part of WordPress.com any longer.

WordPress.com is a fully-hosted solution—we manage all of the technical details for you and provide support for it. That’s what your site has been using for sometime until recently.

Your site on Bluehost is using the WordPress.org software, which is the free software that WordPress.com is based on. More about the difference can be seen at WordPress.com and WordPress.org. In effect, you’re now using a different company to host your website and they’re your go-to for many issues.

To transfer the domain to Bluehost, you will need to go through their system to initiate the transfer. There is no charge from WordPress.com to transfer a domain name away, but only the “winning” registrar can initiate the transfer.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

The login before I put the password actually looks like this”

    http://www.dowlphin.com/wp-login.php?redirect_to=http%3A%2F%2Fdowlphin.com%2Fwp-admin%2F&reauth=1

and after I log in with my admin and my password it looks like this:

    http://www.dowlphin.com/wp-admin/

and then when I make changes on that Dashboard, the changes don’t show up on http://www.dowlphin.com

I am afraid that I feel completely lost here. Can you just reply as to whether this is to be fixed by a) WordPress b) Bluehost c) give up and figure and figure that this is not for me.

    Jack

  • Hi Jack,

The first two URLs indicate that the changes are taking place on Bluehost’s server.

If you’re not seeing the changes on your site, you can try clearing your browser’s cache to be sure (instructions).

In either case, it is outside of WordPress.com’s area. Either Bluehost or the community support at http://wordpress.org/support/

    Thanks.

I contacted Bluehost last night and they wanted at EPP authorization code. I tried to get this from Wild West Domains, but they would not give it to me because I didn’t know my username and password. I then contacted Bluehost and they said that they did not use WWD and I should get it from WordPress. (I don’t recall ever dealing with WWD so I have no idea what the username or password should be).

I then email’ed WordPress, and got the reply from Pam K, and a simultaneous one from you.

Would you be able to give me the EPP authorization that I need for Bluehost.

Also, I don’t understand why I paid $99 to WordPress, nothing to Bluehost, nothing to WWD and yet everything is out of WordPress’ hands.

    Hi,

Error – I did make a payment to Bluehost.

  • Hi Jack,

The site is on Bluehost’s servers, so we can’t touch the actual site (the domain name is different). Because of that, I can’t help on why updating your site’s dashboard at http://dowlphin.com/wp-admin is not working.

It is akin to asking AT&T why your Verizon phone isn’t working, if that clears it up any.

I requested the code be sent to you via e-mail, so please check your spam folder if you don’t see it. I did so using the instructions at Transfer a Domain to Another Registrar.

    Thanks.

It was in the Social folder. Bluehost has accepted the change so I guess everything should now work out fine – but I will wait a few hours for the changes to take place.

I have one more question though. If I want to work on the blog and get to the Dashboard, what address will I need to be going to. I assume that it will be to http://www.dowlphin.com but could you just confirm.

Thanks for your patience and your help, and I apologise if I have been vague, stupid or impatient.

    Jack

  • Good to hear.

Yes: http://www.dowlphin.com/ to view your site and http://www.dowlphin.com/wp-admin to edit it.

If there’s WordPress.com in the address anywhere, wrong place :-).

Happy to help. Domains and hosting and all of this can be really confusing, so thanks for staying with me.

    Cheers!
