I want a simple header consisting of one photo at the top of my front page. When I upload the photo to the header space it is ok right to left but too short up and down and I can’t find any way to expand the height of it.

You most likely need a bigger picture. Some themes support flexible image headers but not all. Even if your site did support this, stretching a smaller image will distort it and it won’t look as nice.
When you go to ‘My Sites’ –> Themes Customize –>Header Image (This is where you uploaded it), what size does it recommend to you? For example my site recommends 2000 x 380.
You will always be better to go with the recommended size. From there you can crop it down to your liking.

Also, just so you are aware, your theme is retired. It is no longer offered. That is ok but you might want to change your theme and go with something that will work better for you, especially if you absolutely need this picture for your header image.
