header caption
-
I’m not able to make a caption appear in my blog header, even though I am able to type it into the caption box associated with the image in the Media Library. I’ve tried a number of times, and even changed my theme (from Yoko to Academia), in case the original theme did not permit captions. What am I doing wrong? I have the feeling it must be something very obvious! Thanks for any help you can offer me.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Just to be sure, have you entered the caption correctly? See an example image here, on point #3: http://en.support.wordpress.com/links/image-links/
If you can also give us the link to the post you’re trying to add image into (with the image already added, doesn’t matter if it’s not showing the caption at the moment), that can help troubleshoot the issue also.

Make a caption appear in your blog header? Captions are for images, galleries and slideshows inserted into posts and static pages. The header image is controlled in Appearance > Header, and doesn’t accept a caption.
Why would you want a caption under the header image? -
Thanks to you both for your replies. I am hoping for a caption on my blog header because I would like to provide attribution to the artist who created the illustration for me, and perhaps link to her other work. But it seems from what justpi wrote above that it is not possible to have a caption on a blog header. Is there really no way around this except by manipulating the image itself?
You can take a look at the blog at http://debofisch.wordpress.com/2014/01/03/test-blog/, which just has a test image and filler text up. I have added the caption on the image through the Media Library as hfzrhmn instructed, and then inserted the image. But as you can see, no caption appears.
Any thoughts? Many thanks!

That is because captions do not appear on headers, as justpi said.
If you want text to appear anywhere in your header, you must edit the image file with a graphics editing program, add the text, and re-upload it.

Or you can write some stuff about your blog (including the attribution etc) in the About page or in a Text widget.
You would be able to add some text directly below the header image only if you had the Custom Design upgrade – there’s no other way.
And adding an attribution below the header image would be wrong in my opinion. The header is your banner: it’s not supposed to have captions, attributions or anything. Think of the front cover of a book: if it has some artwork on it, you don’t see any attribution on the front cover itself, you’ll see it on the back cover or on an inside page.
