Header image

  • Unknown's avatar

    I’m having problems with the size of the header image. I created an image with size instructions for the template that I’ve chosen. But I always have to cut the image then the image doesn’t be as I want!

    What am I doing wrong?

    Thanks

    same problem… I’m new to WordPress, and I want to know if I can replace the picture I have with the same sizes to the one that came with the default CSS. I’m very much willing to subscribe if I can confirm I am able to do that.

    multicuina, how large is the file in question? In kb please, not in pixels. It may have been judged too big in file size. Also what is the exact file name, including extention please?

    Um, theinnercircle, I’m showing under your profile that you’ve been here for 11 months now. Also note that you have a different problem and here, like in real life, it’s kind of rude to interupt someone like you’ve done. We do ask that you do not do that please. You may want to start your own thread since your issue is not related to this one so not to get the two topics confused.

    So, you’ve cropped the picture in advance to the exact size it should be? And it still doesn’t accept it immediately, but instead forces you to crop again?

    In the past, the issue has been because of file size. We’ve had folks with header images 2 megs in size and the cropper has kicked in. That’s why I’m leaning towards file size.

    oh yes, but I officially migrated last Sunday. :)

    Ah, OK, thanks drmike, that makes sense. I always use images way less than 2 megs for headers, so I never noticed that.

    Hi,

    thanks for helping.

    drmike:

    The size of my last image is 32KB and the name file is multicuina.jpg

    Do you need more information?

    shortexact:

    Yes. it forces me to crop again.

    Pez, you have to tell us what is happening. We can’t read your mind. Also please don’t type in ALL CAPS as it’s very rude.

    I also tried to add a header image (Custom Image Header), and it simply doesn’t appear at all. I uploaded the image three times but it never appeared. It says “Visit your site and you should see the new header now,” but I don’t. (No problem cropping it, though–I just sized it to 200 pixels high, and allowed the mask to cut off the excess.)

    @wingedhussar1683
    What is the url for your wordpress.com blog?
    What is the name of the theme you are using?
    Have you pre-sized the header image to the exact size prior to trying to upload it?

    Which themes can I add a header image to?

  • Unknown's avatar

    @pezster12
    You are using the Kubrick theme. The size of the header that you should make prior to trying to upload it is 760 pixels by 200 pixels. Is that the exact size of the header that you are trying to upload?

    The image appeared a few minutes later; the problem seems to have resolved itself. I pre-sized the image to 200 pixels high, but it was too wide (so I allowed the crop feature to cut off the excess).

    @wingedhussar1683
    I always get better results when I pre-size headers to the exact specs and I’m glad to hear your problem has been resolved.

    I change header images regularly, and had some problems, too. The ‘resolved itself’ response fits with those issues.

    The difficulty I have seen (and it occurs with all images, not just headers) occurs when you upload an image file and then want to change that image later (re-size it or optimise it, maybe).

    If you do that, and then re-upload a modified version of the same file, WordPress.com always seems to revert to the originally loaded file, even though you’ve deleted it, and no matter how often you do re-delete it.

    I guess that file may exist on another server somewhere and the problem may resolve itself eventually over time, but it makes editing more or less impossible in the short term.

    The workaround is simply to give your modified, re-sized, re-cropped or optimised image a different name.

    It’s clunky, but it works.

    The other point in uploading header images, as timethief suggests, is to make sure that you crop outside WordPress.com and then upload a file with exactly the requisite image size.

    Cropping and re-sizing on the WP.com header image upload page can sometimes cause a loss of image quality that is best avoided for a large and prominent header image.

    HELP ME TOO :mrgreen:

    *cough* Read the thread… *cough*

    I had this problem a few times, here’s how i resolved it.

    Delete ALL your old header images.

    Make your header image and then resize it to the EXACT sizes given. While it says the head can be upto say, 700×300 if you make it less than that, it will crop it. (no idea why) and wont show up even after cropping. In other words, make the image size so WP dosent have to crop the image. Thats just good web design anyway :)

    Save it using the ‘save for web or devices’ option when you save it. This will give you an image with a very small file size. (Please note that i do this in Photoshop, if you use another proggy you need to find the similar options. There should be a option to save for web in most of the latest image software, except for windows paint *spits on paint*)

    Then upload it through the custom header option.

    And that should work. Usually the problem arises because you tried to upload a image that was smaller than the maximum file size. Some themes will stretch said image to fit, others tile, and some; like Kubrik go weird on you.

    Edit:

    Oh, dont forget to clear the browser cashe before you reupload aswell, aparently that can cause some problems.
