No matter what I do, whether it is a preset header image or my own, it will not change from the one the theme came with! Help!

Every theme has a detailed theme description page and this one is at https://wordpress.com/themes/gateway/ That’s where set up instructions for it are found. Make sure you read it closely.
Custom Header Image
Abstract and decorative background images will work best as Custom Header images. The recommended header size for Gateway is 2560 pixels wide by 640 pixels high. https://wordpress.com/themes/gateway/The live demo site is at https://gatewaydemo.wordpress.com/
All support docs are at https://en.support.wordpress.com/
Search for custom header there https://en.support.wordpress.com/?s=custom+header

Thanks for the response timethief.
I have been through this already and I do not believe that this is user error as it won’t even change to the pre-loaded header images. It won’t change off of the NY skyline.

Howdy –
I’ll try to recreate the issue you are both experiencing. Please share the following details.
-Which browser you are working in and the version
-Which operating system you use (Windows or oSX) and the version.
-Does clearing your browser cache help?
-Does the issue continue from a different web browser?
-Do you have any browser extensions enabled? Does disabling them help?
-
I have tried on mac and pc (both latest os) on safari, ie and chrome. Clearing browser cache makes no difference. The other pages are updating it is just the home page that is not changing. And no to browser extensions.

Thank you. I’ll give it a try from my side of things. Can you let me know which image you want to use?
-
I had a low res placeholder in there for now as I need to obtain the original, but it was of a group playing cricket i.e. whatever goes in there now I will need to change again in the near future.
-
No problem. Can you see the change? I’ve added the cricket game as the featured image on your home page.

Can you help me change mine as well? I’ve tried on chrome and internet explorer on my windows computer. I was trying to get a photo of succulents (other than the preset one) but I’ll settle for the preset if that will work best

Thanks @haileybeach, I checked your about page and see the colorful succulents. Are you talking about on your home page? If so, the top image on the home page is the featured image for that page, and you can change that by editing your Home page, remove the existing featured image and then select the one of the succulents. Let me know how that goes for you and if you have any problems.
