Header Image Degrades when Updated/Published

I’ve been struggling with this for a week or so. Hemingway Rewritten theme.

I’ve been adding to my library several versions of an image I am trying to use for the Header image in this theme. The original image was 4000x3000px. I’ve used GIMP to scale the image to 1280px width (and just let the vertical do whatever it wants). I’ve saved several versions of the 1280 with 300, 600, 900, and 1200 dpi feature in the scaling box in GIMP. I’ve tried them all with the same result – loss of focus slightly but I notice it.

When I see the header – the image sharpness is lessened – reduced. If I insert this on a site page… the image is clear and sharp. I’ve had one HE (Happiness Eng) tell me that aspect ratios of the images I’m trying to use were different and that this contributed to the loss of sharpness. I have scaled images to 1280 though and I thought this was the horizontal width of the header used in Hemingway Rewritten. So when I put it in the header – it CROPS the image .. but mostly just topping the image or I select a band through the middle of the image and hit ‘crop and save’ and it inserts this into the header then.

Then the image looks less sharp (viewed in the header). I’ve inserted on to a site page.. image is a little smaller horizontally and sharper.

    What do I not understand?

    Thanks
    SRS
