Header image in twenty twelve

    I have uploaded an image for a header in my new twenty twelve themed blog. It seemed to crop fine, but it does not extend over the widgets column on the right. The examples shown with the twenty twelve theme include several with header images extending over both columns.

    I am unable to determine if there is something I can do to make the image wider, or if that was accomplished with some kind of upgrade that I do not have.

    Please let me know if I can make this header wider and how.

    Ok thanks for that TT. I uploaded two versions of that image. The first version is huge and the “crop box” wouldn’t capture the part of the image that I want, but only one fingernail of it. So I used the smaller version I had uploaded. Apparently even though the box looks like it is capturing the desired part of the image, you are explaining to me that the image is too small to really fill the box. What I “see” is not what I get, then. Confusing. Especially since I’ve been blogging with another theme for a couple years and must just be lucky and have a forgiving theme or something (it is twenty ten).

    I have been reading about editing images for size but I can’t see a way to do anything other than crop when I am working with the header image. Help in editing for px precision??

    So I can process my images in Lightroom. Does that mean that if I set the export settings there to exactly 940 x 198, that I would get the correct size image?

    What I don’t quite understand is how it selects the correct part of the picture to shape to the 940 x 198 dimension.

    Do I crop it first?

    Could having the right pixel width and height still result in a large file size that takes up too much space?

    I got it working by uploading a much larger image, though I still reduced the size somewhat in Lightroom. I am still puzzled about how to find the sweet spot between large enough but not wasteful of the media space on the blog.
