Header Image issues

@ supernovia,
Your updates work for me, but I suspect they might still lead to confusion, especially for new bloggers, regarding a couple of points which I will touch upon presently. Hope you don’t mind me putting my two cents in : )
From the Goran theme guide’s Custom Header Image section:
Custom Header Images can be displayed on Pages and Archives if a Featured Image for the page is not already set.
Comments:
You suggest that “Pages and Archives [pages]” might have a featured image set by default when the Goran theme is applied to a new site, or it might not. That’s true, but it depends entirely upon the choice of front page type made during the sit set up (create a site) process. In my tests I found that all static pages have default featured images assigned at the time of creation, if, and only if, one chooses during the site setup process to display a “welcome page” on the front page. That choice leads to a static page on the front page with the Front Page Template applied, plus featured images on every default page and post. The “About,” “Contact,” and “Blog” pages, which are also generated at the time of the site’s creation, have default featured images applied. The default “First Blog Post” also has a default featured image applied. See the default features images on the pages of my test site https://sbstage15.wordpress.com, for examples.
However, no archives pages on the test site have default featured images applied on the newly generated site. Because the site has a default post, it has archives pages (author, year, month, date, category).
The Custom Header can be displayed on the site’s Static Front Page
The statement is too vague, because, being a page, the Static Front Page will have a default featured image if the site’s creator chose a “Welcome Page” front page format during the site creation process. I would, instead, include the statement about the static front page in the first paragraph of this section of the theme guide, which might read something like the following:
Custom Header Images can be displayed on static pages, including the Static Front Page, and archives pages, if a Featured Image for the page is not already set. However, Featured Images will be set by default on all of the default pages, and the default post, if the site’s creator chooses the “Welcome Page” front page option during the process of creating the site.
Perhaps my suggestion is too complicated for an introductory guide, but I think it doesn’t leave as many questions pending.

Thanks for that, really. I see what you’re saying. Right now, if they used our default content to set up their site, it will include default featured images that they’d need to remove.
Hmm.
Let me run this by our friends on the theme team and see what they think.

You’re welcome.
Right now, if they used our default content to set up their site, it will include default featured images that they’d need to remove.
Yes. That is, if they want a custom header image to display they might have to remove default featured images that they have no idea where/how to remove. And, in any case, are likely unaware that they must be removed first.
Here are some results of my tests:
If in response to the question “What would you like your homepage to look like?” I chose “A list of my latest posts” and the Goran theme, as I did on sbstage16.wordpress.com, then no default media files were found in the media library. There were no featured images created, but there might have been had a chosen another theme.
When I chose “A grid of my latest posts” and did not choose a theme at the time of creation, as I did on sbstage17.wordpress.com, no media files were created, and no featured images were found on the two default pages and one default post.
However, when I chose “A grid of my latest posts” and selected the theme Pictorico (randomly), as I did on sbstage18.wordpress.com, there were six default featured images created, one for each of four default posts, and one for each of the two default pages.
So whether or not default featured images might interfere with the new site creator’s attempts to add a custom header image depends upon choices made during the site creation process, and other factors regarding theme design.
Relevant choices made during site creation include the following:
- 1. Which of the three general styles of front page is chosen: “A list of my latest posts,” “A welcome page for my site,” or “A grid of my latest posts”
- 2. Whether or not a theme is chosen before the domain is created
Significant factors regarding a chosen theme:
- 1. Whether the theme includes default images in the media library
- 2. Under what conditions does the theme include default media files?
- 3. If present on a theme, where are the default images assigned?
- 4. If present on a theme, are the default images featured images?

@ supernovia,
Everyday lately, I see several topics in which a member complains that they can’t get rid of or replace a “header image.” It’s always a featured image that they aren’t unaware of. Btw, featured images, including default featured images which the member may be completely unaware of, may be retained after switching to another theme. So that you have topics such as home page header image won’t change?, where the member complains that he or she seems to be stuck with a homepage header image (it’s actually a featured image) from the last theme used.

It’s always a featured image that they aren’t unaware of.
That is, they are aware of the image, but don’t know that it’s a featured image (not a header image), or why they can’t replace it by simply uploading a new custom header image.

Thanks. I’m going to chat with our theme folks about this and hopefully see if we can clarify things a bit. We appreciate the feedback.
