Header Image Problems
-
Hi guys, I am trying to upload a custom image in the header box of the “Blix” template with limited success;
The required dimension specifications are 690 x 115. Re-sizing my image without distortion results in dimensions of 470 x 115.
The problem is that when the file is uploaded into the “Your Header Image” previewer it asks me to crop the image which I find very unusual given that my file is actually smaller than the required specification. Stranger still is that even after I’ve cropped the image it displays on the site stretched out to maximise the header placement space?? I’ve experimented with gif and jpg formats with the same result. The image is only 14kb.Thoughts?

Whatever size you upload, it will always stretch/crop to the size required. Since your starting image is smaller than the headerspace, you’re always going to get distortion; the only way I could suggest to avoid this would be to make a frame around it in your image program, and save THAT as the image, frame and all, 690 x 115.
When it asks you to crop, can you not just “pretend” to crop it, pulling the cropping tool out to the corners? Is that not an option for you?

thanks raincoaster – appreciate the prompt response. i’ll give this a try although it might take me a little while to figure out how to do this using irfanview. ill be sure to post how i get on.

quick update. followed your recommendation re: creating a frame to spec. and that seems to have addressed the cropping issue. thanks! however the resolution look really, really crap?? are there any guidelines re: editing / uploading images that I can reference or is wordpress simply not wysiwyg and the only way to achieve a desireable outcome is through trial and error?

I haven’t had any problems, but I generally upload a high-quality image to begin with, higher resolution than the web normally displays.
There are a number of threads on Header image resolution, so I suggest you do a quick forum search and see if any of them have any advice that works for you. Also, if you could drop a link to your blog we could take a look and give direct feedback. We all have different setups with different screen resolutions.
