  I would like to add an ALT tag to the header image on my home page giving details of the image.
  I would also like to know whether it is possible to add a different header image on different categories, eg for the theatre review section I would like to add an audience image, on the medical section I would like to add an image of a surgery with patients and so on.

  Hi. Regarding the Alt tag on a header image, apparently it’s not possible:

  However, regarding your second question. Twenty Ten offers the possibility of using a custom header for different pages or posts (not categories though), but that’s a start :-)
