Header images disappearing from media library
-
This occurred with 2 different blogs, both 2011 theme, for header images added in the last 10 days. The header image appears as expected but shows a broken image icon in the media library. The header image continues to appear in the blog as long as it is the designated header image. However, the image disappears when the random header option is selected. Subsequently if it is randomly selected by the program, a broken image will appear in the header image area. When posting a new header image, check your media library to see if the image has been properly stored.

Please provide the URLs for the header images you refer to and specify exactly which blogs each one is from. I’ll tag this thread for a Staff follow-up. Please subscribe to the thread so you are notified when they respond and please be patient while waiting.

timethief, thank you for your interest . I’ve been doing testing and here is where it gets interesting. The header image cropped-img_2938-800×600.jpg in the blog http://downtheroadaway.wordpress.com/ still shows up in the header as the designated header image, but still shows as a broken image in the media library. I went to another 2011 theme blog, went to Dashboard/Media/Library, uploaded an image to the library from my computer and then went Dashboard/Appearance/Header, chose the image from the media library and it cropped and stored in the media library correctly. I deleted the image, then went to Dashboard/Appearance/Header, chose the same image from my computer, uploaded and cropped and it directly to form the header image, it appeared in my header image space but showed up in the media library as a broken image file. So the problem is created in the direct file upload and crop to header process. The work around is to upload the file to the media library first, then use the image in the library to create the header image.

Hi Jim,
A clarification question for you. When you say these images are showing up as broken images, are they only appearing as such in your Media Library, or are they showing as broken images in your Header on the front of your site as well?
Let me know!

Ultimately they show up as a broken image in the header. When I first import them, crop and save, the header image is intact while it immediately shows up as a broken image in the media library. The header image appears to remain intact even as I exit and re-enter the WordPress blog although it may just be Chrome reloading the image from cache. Then I set the header to show random images. The next time the image randomly shows up in the header, it appears as a broken image. That was my first clue that something was going wrong – it encouraged me to look in the library where I found the broken image icon.

Hiya Jim,
I haven’t been able to replicate the part where my header image shows as a broken image on my front page of my site quite yet, but everything else is happening exactly like you described it. I’ve written it all up and submitted it to our Theme developers. They’ll take a look at it and as soon as I have any additional information I will let you know!
Thanks for bringing this to our attention!

I have now reset the header on the blog http://downtheroadaway.wordpress.com/ to random image, and then returning to the home page, clicked on the header to scroll through the header pics until the broken image appeared. I have now left it on random so you can perform the same test. I don’t know if there are any other themes that use random header images and none of my other blog themes do that, so I can’t test it from here to determine if it is a wrinkle with 2011 theme only. I am very familiar with 2011. I have several 2011 theme blogs in which I frequently switch between fixed and random header images and so can confirm that this issue only began to occur near the beginning of this month. It was not apparent at any time previously in the past 3 years.

Thanks for that additional information about it only having been going on for a month or so. I let everyone know. I’ll keep you in the loop!

Howdy Jim!
Wow, been a while! Sorry about the delay on this. We have looked into the issue but haven’t had any luck finding the cause.
It’s also become complicated because the Custom Header is now set exclusively from the Customizer, and the Customizer doesn’t appear to have this problem.
To remove the broken image from your Media Library, I’d recommend re-uploading and cropping your image from within Customizer -> Header Image.
I hope this helps. :)
Cheers,
Caroline
