Header images for categories

  • Unknown's avatar

I need to know how to add a child theme to my site so that I can use different images for the headers of each category. I see that all I need to do is set a new featured image in the oldest post of a category but it appears that there is some necessary code that needs to be installed somewhere. I don’t know how to do this. I don’t know much about code. I would appreciate any help here. Oh, the theme is Hemingway Rewritten. Thanks!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    That’s not possible.

The only themes we can use on WordPress.com hosted blogs are licensed and adapted to run on our multiuser software the themes are found here http://wordpress.com/themes/ and in your dashboard at > Appearance > Themes

There is no FTP access to free hosted WordPress.com blogs for security reasons and we cannot:
    upload any third party themes,
    create child themes,
    create our own themes,
    edit templates,
    create own own layouts,
or use stylesheets from other themes.

    Relevant support docs:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/ftp-access/
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/adding-new-themes/

You cannot upload any third party themes into a WordPress.COM hosted blog so be clear on that. There is no upgrade you can purchase here that changes that reality.

WordPress.org offers free software that you can install on a web server. You can create themes, upload and install themes and plugins, run ads, and edit the database, etc. If you want FTP access and to install plugins or third party themes into a site then you will have to hire a web host http://wordpress.org/hosting/ and set up your own WordPress.org install.

We cannot access and edit the templates underlying our themes.

ok, well, it let me change the main header but it changed it for all the categories. I just wanted to be able to click on a category and see a different featured image. If it’s not allowed then why is the option there to change the featured image? or change the header if you go to customize?

i have seen folks do this in the twenty eleven and twenty “other” themes which are free so i guess i’m confused.

maybe asking how to install a child theme is the wrong question? can I change the header image for different categories i guess is what I should be asking. I thought that it required a child theme to do so. Sorry if I sound ignorant. Trying to learn.

Yes and that is normal behavior.

    Hi @boscobitme14,

If you set a large enough featured image for a post or page, it should replace the header image. However, for category pages like the one below, you are unable to set a featured image so this will not be possible.

    https://good4ustuff.wordpress.com/category/daily-word/

Those pages will automatically take on the header you set under Appearance -> Header. This feature is only available to manually created pages and posts.

Ok well thanks for the replies. So if I download WP and create a site hosted somewhere else I can do such but just not with the free site?

It could be possible on a self-hosted site if you found a theme that supports custom header images on category pages. I don’t know of a theme off the top of my head. The difficulty is that category pages like the ones you’re referring to are automatically created, so you can’t edit the featured image associated with each.

It’s definitely possible if you’re looking to edit the archive page templates. However, that would require a bit of coding!
