That is not the way your theme is designed.
Every theme has a detailed theme description page. See https://wordpress.com/theme/independent-publisher-2 and note that’s where set up instructions for it, the features of it, and the live demo site link is found.
Please see here site logo https://en.support.wordpress.com/site-logo/
You can browse free themes with site logos at https://wordpress.com/themes/free/filter/site-logo
re: switching themes
Themes are just “skins” on WordPress.COM hosted blogs.
Note that switching themes https://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/#switch-themes can be easily done, provided you are logged in as Admin under the same username account that registered the site, you tohttp://NAME_OF_BLOG.wordpress.com/wp-admin/themes.php
*Replace NAME_OF_BLOG in that URL with the actual name of your blog. wp-admin/themes.php
We have a preview function. No content is lost when switching themes on WordPress.COM hosted blogs. It does not matter if the site is private or public. Use the customizer https://en.support.wordpress.com/customizer/

Hi there – you need to do two things to fix up your site:
1 – To remove the “four pronged empty star,” open your Customizer, and go into the Theme Options panel. Remove the email address there.
2 – To add your logo, still in the Customizer, open the Site Identity panel. Click the “Select logo” there and upload your logo.
That should do it – let me know if you get stuck at any point.
