header pic too small

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello WordPress,

I want a picture for a header and I want it to go all the way across the screen length-wise and not too wide but wide enough for the whole pic to not have to be cropped. The photos in the templates I’ve tried (now using ‘Sidekick’) are doing what I want but I don’t know how they got it there because WP is telling me I have to crop the photo, which I don’t want to do. This template says the right header size is 480 x 150. Even a smaller size is asking to get cropped. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thank You.

Sidekick says it supports flexible header images: http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/sidekick/ .

That means you can follow the instructions here for flexible headers and use any width/height of header you desire: http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/custom-header-image/#flexible-headers

    Thanks, I see that.

It did allow me to post a header without cropping but it’s still tiny. When I read about this particular theme, it says it supports panoramic headers (1500 wide, 3×1 ratio). The pic I want doesn’t have those dimensions.

*Is it possible to stretch the pic I’m using and not lose image quality?

*Is there another theme that will stretch a pic that is not huge in a header without losing quality in the image? (I can’t find one yet)

    Thanks

If it’s not ok to bump, I’m sorry. I think I might have gotten lost because there was already a reply. Thanks.

These are NOT header images. They are featured images in posts.

    http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/sidekick/

    Panoramic Featured Images
Sidekick will display a post’s featured image, full browser width, if its aspect ratio is at least 3×1 (width x height) and its minimum width is 1500px. You can set featured images on the Post Editor page under Featured Image. http://en.support.wordpress.com/featured-images/#setting-a-featured-image

If you don’t see the Featured Image module on your Add New or Edit Post page, please make sure you’ve selected Featured Image in your Screen Options. http://en.support.wordpress.com/screen-options

ps: Thanks for showing how to find my prior posts yesterday.

I see the featured images. I’m trying to upload a large photo as a header.

    Going to appearance –> header
I upload with or without cropping and it’s tiny.

    Thanks

    Appearance > Header

You can select an image to be shown at the top of your site by uploading from your computer or choosing from your media library. After selecting an image you will be able to crop it.
Suggested width is 480 pixels. Suggested height is 150 pixels.

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/custom-header-image/

I do not see “Sidekick” listed among the flexible header themes here in the Table http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/custom-header-image/#flexible-headers but the link is to themes and it’s included.

I went to my test blog and uploaded a header image that is 480px × 288px (on flexible themes the width is not variable – only the height is)

Yes, I know that -I am doing this.

If you go to my blog, you’ll see how TINY the picture is. How is that a header? Sidekick has a panoramic header in their WP trial, when you first look at it. That’s what I want.

Can somebody please tell me how to get my image enlarged. No matter what size image I put there (using ‘Sidekick’) it’s TINY.

    Thanks

It is what is its ie. it’s a header image and if you don’t like the size then you can switch themes.

Do you have a custom design upgrade? And is this actually a CSS editing question being posted into the wrong sub-forum?

If I don’t like the size, then my guess is that I’m probably doing something wrong, not that I need an upgrade. If it is what is its, then the pic in the Sidekick header that is ‘advertised’ is a custom header? If yes, that is misleading. If this is the wrong forum for my question, WP is more than welcome to say it.

ps: Nobody meant to p— you off. Obviously, I did, without the intention.

The blog linked to your username appears to be devoid of any blogger created contact. You have not provided a link to the blog starting with http:// that you are working on.

Bottom line: Both Sidekick and Superhero have large featured images and small header images of 480px in width (on flexible themes the width is not variable – only the height is variable.)

“blogger created contact” -this is lingo and I haven’t got a clue what it means.

It sounds like Sidekick’s panoramic header might be a custom upgrade. Or, it is not and the info you are giving me is not complete. I don’t know. I do appreciate your attempts.

If the pics used as headers on the themes that are advertised are custom upgrades, I don’t think this is helping users or WordPress. If this is the case, it’s misleading because it says this theme is free and it seems fair to assume that what’s in the ‘ad’ is not a custom upgrade. Like I said, they’ve got a panoramic header -if that’s not a custom upgrade, I’m doing something wrong. If it is, it’s misleading.

    Thanks
