Header prob and overall design

trying to set up a blog site. Header is cropped weird on view when I go to site. But is fine in my preview. Also tagline does not appear. I cleared the cache.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

The appearance of your header will depend upon at least the following three factors regarding the device/browser combination used to view the website:
    1. monitor size
    2. resolution setting
    3. zoom setting (browser)
I have to zoom out two clicks to see the full image. That can happen with certain themes, when viewing is done with devices with smaller monitor sizes. My PC monitor is 12″ X 9″ (1024 X 768 pixels).

I created the banner to the specs of the theme

When you zoom out you can simulate the appearance on a larger monitor. I don’t know how many pixels or inches one zoom click on Firefox represents, but presumably with a monitor of somewhat larger size, with a resolution of 1280 or higher, you’d be able to see the entire banner, uncropped.

Again, two zoom clicks out on my monitor displays the full banner, on the device I’m presently using. Others using different devices, with different monitor sizes, and other screen resolutions might require greater, lesser, or no adjustment to see the full banner.

Taglines do not appear on some themes, though the tagline field at General Settings is present in all WordPress.com themes.

thank you. Can I send you the correct view to verify the correct view or can you already see it in my file?

  • Unknown's avatar

You may send a screen shot of what you are seeing. I’m not sure what you mean by “correct view.” The full size of the header (banner) image, 1240 X 400, is available by viewing “Page Info” in the Firefox Tools menu. The size is scaled down to 1024 X 330 on my PC, when I view the full header image. However, when viewing the image on the homepage with my standard setup, it is not scaled, but rather cropped to approximately 944 X 400. Some of the original picture is cropped from each side.

yes exactly – it is cropped. Thank you for clarifying. Not liking that. Are there themes that don’y crop? I mean whats the point of giving a recommended banner size and then its cropped?! I’d really like to get going on designing. Thank you

I read a review for weaverII. Said it was free. Do not see it in the free section

    @dionnepia

I think what you’re describing as cropping is just the responsive design of the Harmonic theme:

At some screen widths it may appear slightly cropped or scaled, but your header image is the recommended size for best results. Not all themes handle header images this way, so you may want to experiment with several from this list:

I read a review for weaverII. Said it was free. Do not see it in the free section

This sounds like a WordPress theme only available for self-hosted sites running the free software from WordPress.org.

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

Are there themes that don’t crop?

Yes. Logically, this sort of problem shouldn’t arise on such a common and prominent feature as the header on a responsive design theme. WordPress lists the Harmonic theme among its responsive layout themes.

I can only surmise that the designers of Harmonic considered responsiveness of the header of less importance than that of the background images of the five front page template sections. These do appear at full width on my setup.

    Hi Dionne,

Your site loaded well for me in Chrome, Firefox, and Safari.

Do you know the operating system and browser version of the folks who could not visit your site? I’d be happy to test out their specific combination.

It’s possible they need to update their browser, they can find the newest versions here:
