Header rotator is calling a non-existent image.
-
Hello,
Today I uploaded 9 images so that I could use the random image rotator. It works fine except that for some reason it thinks there is a 10th image to rotate, and that image no longer exists. That of course leaves a white, blank header image at times, so I had to turn the feature off.
See screencap with highlight:
That’s a blank image with a radio button on the upper left in the highlight
By doing some code sleuthing when the failure occurs, I determined that the image it is calling is:
http://wattsupwiththat.files.wordpress.com/2014/08/cropped-earth-hd-time-lapse-view-from-space.jpgI tried uploading that image again, but a numeral 1 gets appended to the name, so that doesn’t work.
Looks like this non-existent header image is stuck int he database, and I have no way to remove it from rotation. This may be some artifact of me deleting older test header images earlier today, but I simply used the tools wordpress.com offers me, and did them one at a time.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi Anthony,
I just took a look in our system and it doesn’t look like the image when you referenced (http://wattsupwiththat.files.wordpress.com/2014/08/cropped-earth-hd-time-lapse-view-from-space.jpg) is being referenced anywhere currently. I didn’t want to activate the rotating headers without your permission while your site was active.
Would you mind testing this at some point and seeing if you’re still having this issue?
Let me know!

The problem remains.
I turned on the header randomizer and cycled through several posts and pages. My list went through correctly…for awhile.
I soon saw a blank white space where the header should be. Right clicking on it and doing a “view background image” it gives the http://wattsupwiththat.files.wordpress.com/2014/08/cropped-earth-hd-time-lapse-view-from-space.jpg image as the URL in the header image.
Trust me when I say this is a real and repeatable problem.

Hi Anthony,
I investigated this issue, and it should be fixed for you now. It looks like the header image was deleted from your Media Library but the deleted image was still being included in the list of header images for your site.
I fixed that up from your site’s Customizer. In the Header section there, I clicked the “x” on the deleted (broken) image to remove it from the list of header images for your site. That way, if you enable randomized header images that deleted image won’t be used anymore.
Please let me know if I can do anything more to help with that. :)

Thanks Rachel.
I’m a season WP user, and I was looking for a way to delete that header from the list, but I was using the old interface [Menu > Appearance> Header ]which says:
“You can now choose your header image and see the change immediately in a live preview by going to Customize → Header. This page will automatically redirect in the future. “
Maybe it is time to finish that redirect?
Or at the very least, put some note in the customizer that says “To delete a header image, hover over it, and click the X”
I completely missed this. And, I’m sure a few others have too.

Thanks for that feedback, Anthony! I’ll pass it along to the developers who are working on those features.
