header vs featured image

  I’ve noticed that when I select a featured image (to help with facebook posts) it also changes my header. I’d like the header and featured image to work independently of each other. I’d like something other than my header to show up as the picture on my Facebook posts. The WordPress reader also shows my header unless I choose a featured image which then of course changes my header. I’m using Pilcrow. Is this a function of the theme or do all themes work like this? Thanks.
