Headers and backgrounds

I’m having little luck with these types of images.
Sometimes I choose a background image and it doesn’t show at all. This happens on all sorts of themes. The background just stays white.
Also, some themes do not show the header image like it shows in the thumbnail. Like Bizberg. I like how the image has a rough edge, but mine does not. And on themes like Futurio and Feminine Style, I can never get my images to have that wavy outline. How can I achieve this?
Lastly, themes like Creativeily and Bulk have nice big images on the loading page. How do I make this happen? I’ve tried to add a header, but that only puts the image up on top. Along with the site name.
I’m just trying to create the site I have imagined, but I’m not versed in design. Any help is greatly appreciated!
