Headers, sizing problem
-
Why does it insist on cropping the sides off of the header I made for Misty look? It’s 760 by 178 pixels. I realize it isn’t *exactly* 760 x 190 pixels, it’s a little less. Yet, it insists it MUST be cropped, making the custom header ugly. It won’t let me expand the crop area to include the whole image either, I tried. I’ll put the header I want to use into a post for you to see after I post this. Help!

The best way to ensure you get a header that you do not need to crop using the MistyLook theme is to optimize and pre-size prior to uploading it. http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/07/08/which-themes-can-i-add-a-header-image-to/

Take a look at the post I just made. As I said the part it wants cropped meets the 760 rule. Why does using *LESS* on one of the sides mean the longer side *MUST* be cropped? That makes no sense.
-
Adding, and as for making the 760 by 190 pixels, I would, gladly if the originals they gave me would allow for it. The original they gave me was 806 by 189. The best I could do was 760 by 178. (And for headers it says 760 by 190 EXACTLY will be used as is.)
-
Again, I’m saying they ought to set it up so that if it registers the longest side meets their requirements, that they don’t *MAKE* you crop it.

I can’t see a link to your blog or to the post your speak of. Please post one.
And isn’t the maximum size for images in posts a different subject completely than header sizes? Or did I misunderstand your header question above? http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/09/25/how-big-can-my-images-be/Any package like microsoft paint Photoshop / Paint Shop Pro will do it, but there is no need to spend money on doing this. These are free:
– Irfanview
– Picasa
– GIMP
– Photofiltre
– FastStone
– Pixia -

I downloaded the header WordPress supplied for the Misty Look Theme, customized it, and resized it to 760 by 178 pixels. Because it wasn’t 760 by 190 pixels EXACTLY, the software insisted that the longest part HAD to be cropped, even though it wasn’t bigger than 760 pixels. The only way to *make* it fit that rule would be to crop the original image, which would drastically reduce the visual appeal of the header, and make it entirely not worth the bother of making a custom image. *artist fit*

…I used Microsoft Picture It and Irfanview. I’m not stupid. Read all of what I am saying.
Go here, take a look at the original they offer you, then *YOU* try to make it fit those rules WITHOUT CROPPING THE ORIGINAL IMAGE. See?
-
Pardon, this page has the headers for download. My bad.
-
-
Ok, and now I see it *says* 760 by 189, but download it. It isn’t. When you download it, you get a bitmap image that is 806 by 189 pixels. Try it for yourself and see.
-
You’re right. I simply set the size attributes in microsoft paint and create headers that upload into MistyLook and other themes with no problems at all. Why not use a program like that and size it down?
-
I’m mostly grouchy because I spent all that time lining up the letters of different colors to make the header look right, and cropping it ruins the look. Bah, wasted effort. And again, it makes *NO* sense that they would insist that it has to be cropped when the largest measurement doesn’t break their rules. I’m asking them to fix this please?
-
I don’t know what you mean there. I made the new header on my computer, but it isn’t fitting. How would you make it fit? First, verify that it gives a bitmap of 806 by 189. Are you saying I can make it give me my download in 760 by 190 pixels? How?

I don’t know what program you are using, but if it allows, you can change the horizontal scale of the text down to say 99.9% or something such and get it to fit without adversely effecting the look, or change the tracking a little.
Like I said, I don’t know what program you are using.
-
I agree that this should be brought to staff attention so corrections can be made. And no that’s not what I’m saying. Do you have microsoft paint, photoshop or a similar program on your computer?
-
Look at the header I made. Could you use a different font, with custom colored letters in paint? I used Microsoft Picture it because of the ease of editing and making the colors just right. Bleh. My main point is, it shouldn’t be this way in the first place though. They need to fix their software so it’ll give people a pass if they aren’t going over the size limit.

All I’ve got is Microsoft Picture It! 2000, Irfanview, and Paint to use for things like this. Don’t have the money atm to spend on computer programs, I make my artwork off the computer, when I can afford supplies.
