Headers, sizing problem

  • Unknown's avatar

I can swing ya the file directly if you’d rather, but it isn’t for commercial use.

  • Unknown's avatar

I’ve found a site that sells it although it may not be the exact same font as the “M” looks different in the sample text, as does the “a”. I left a message on your about page. The header looks quite nice. I like it.

  • Unknown's avatar

Thank you. Yeah, I saw several that were similar, some for sale, some free. It was several years ago, and on a site about the Celts.

  • Unknown's avatar

ARGH! I should have realized this, I know. *sigh* Please, can you put something in the themes with custom headers that give the size of the custom header on each description in case the person wants to make their own? I found a way to squish the headers I made so they will fit with the Iceburgg theme, but the proportions are not preserved, so the headers I made for are not as pretty. Thinking about it, I’d bet Iceburgg isn’t the only one with a differing header size. (Misty look required 760 X 190, and Iceburgg requires 760 X 150!)

  • Unknown's avatar

Bleh. The headers I made for Iceburgg aren’t as pretty, I am saying. *blush*

  • Unknown's avatar

    @katk
Having the header size on the presentation > themes page sounds like a good idea. There is this FAQ of course, which you could have open when looking at different themes: http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/07/08/which-themes-can-i-add-a-header-image-to/ which has sizes.

  • Unknown's avatar

The sizes are also found on the “Custom Image Headers” page. And this is what is on that page for Iceburgg:

    Upload New Header Image
Here you can upload a custom header image to be shown at the top of your blog instead of the default one. On the next screen you will be able to crop the image.
Images of exactly 790 x 150 pixels will be used as-is.

  • Unknown's avatar

Well, had it said in the description of the theme something to the effect of “This theme’s header is 760 X 150” for Iceburgg, and “This theme’s header is 760 X 190” it’d saved me a little pain. I thought it was uniform, you see. I thought that whatever the size of the custom header you downloaded, (which as I recall Misty Look’s header they gave me to customize was the wrong size) that no matter what the header you upload *MUST* be 760 X 190. Turns out it isn’t uniform, with a default size at all. So, say this in the theme descriptions as well as the upload page, please?

  • Unknown's avatar

Yeah, see, even the size of the header template you can download to customize isn’t necessarily the correct size. I have good reason to gripe here. I just rechecked. The custom header you upload to use with Misty Look *MUST* be 760 X 190, right? Yet, the header template you can download in order to make a custom header for Misty Look, is 806 X 109. Now, with the programs I have, I can “squish” the image to conform to the 760 X 190 rule, but the image will be warped. I don’t have a program that will change the size and keep the image “pretty”. Please, please, please work to make things somewhat more uniform in this, and work to indicate the sizes required per theme? It’d save newbies some aggravation.

  • Unknown's avatar

Pardon, the header template you download in order to make your own Mistly Look custom header is 806 X 189, not 109. *wry* I can be such a fumble fingers at times…and I’m a touch typist, at that! *blush*

  • Unknown's avatar

WOW! We have two pages here.

I don’t have a program that will change the size and keep the image “pretty”.

Here’s the bottom line. If you want headers then you have to make them. If you have to make headers then you need programs to do that with and acquiring that program is up to you. <p class=”MsoNormal”>There are many programs which you can use to optimize and pre-size images. Packages such as Photoshop / Paint Shop Pro will do it, but there is no need to spend money on doing this. These are free:
    Irfanview
    Picasa
    GIMP
    Photofiltre
    FastStone
    Pixia

Please, please, please work to make things somewhat more uniform in this, and work to indicate the sizes required per theme? It’d save newbies some aggravation.

If you want to speak to staff then send in a “support” ticket from the top right hand corner of any admin side blog page on weekdays 8-4 PM Pacific time. But do note that IMO “consistency” is neither going to be pursued nor achieved. The themes used here are all GPL (General Public License) created by individual, independent designers, who do not work for wordpress.

    Happy blogging!

P.S. As you have all the information you need to make headers now will you please consider marking this thread as “resolved”?

    Thanks and happy blogging. :)

I have Paint, Microsoft Picture It! 2000 *and* Irfanview. Irfanview will either resize a thing and “keep the proportions” or size the thing to your specifications but it WARPS THE IMAGE in order to do so! (Did you even look at my blog, with its custom header, and the entries about the custom headers I have made *SINCE* starting this forum topic?) I cannot do as KatM did, and resize an image without warping it, as I said. Please, take the time to fully grasp what I try so painstakingly to convey Timethief? I don’t like when people don’t bother to pay attention to all that I have said, and reply in such a way that it shows blatently that this is what happened.

I can, and do make custom headers that are the correct size for Misty Look, (Using a combination of Paint, then Microsoft Picture It!, then Irfanview to make sure it stayed the same size and Picture it didn’t alter the size.) and I can, and will make custom headers that are the correct size for whatever theme I choose to use in the future now that I know that each theme uses a different size, and I know to be wary of the templates they give to download because they might not be the right size either. I would have made custom headers the correct size for Iceburgg, had I been aware that Iceburgg didn’t require 760 X 190, but instead required 760 X 150. On the custom headers I made, most of what you see is fonts. I have a “snowflake” font which I used. Going back, to place each kind/size/color of flake in exactly the same spot on the correct sized custom colored Navy Blue background is more trouble than just warping the image a little in order to make it fit. I will compromise on this though, since it isn’t as much of an “uglification” as cropping the Misty Look header I first made would have been.

I will send in a ticket. Again, there is actually reason to gripe here. The Custom Header feature isn’t the least bit “logical” in size requirements for custom headers, even the custom header template for Misty Look THEY GIVE YOU to download and customize IS NOT THE CORRECT SIZE! (It is 806 X 190, and the custom header you upload for Misty Look *MUST* be 760 X 190.) That, and the fact that apparently the different themes require different header sizes, can, will, and does cause aggravation. In short, the custom header feature is sloppily implemented!

  • Unknown's avatar

Again, all I am asking for, is that they let people know that “this theme requires a custom header be uploaded with <these> dimension” on the description. Also, I don’t think it would be too much trouble for them to fix the Misty Look template and resize it to 760 X 190 so people can download the correct size in the first place. These are simple things, that would save people headaches. It is sloppy, and people will see it that way.

    G’day kat,
I’m hoping you have you have sent this suggestion into staff. We can chat about it forever here where it may get overlooked but it may get overlooked. Only staff can effect what you want. That’s why I think it’s best, if you haven’t already done so, that you use the “support” button on the top right hand corner of any admin side blog page weekdays 8-4PM.
    Cheers :)

  • Unknown's avatar

Please excuse the “doubles” up there. Obviously, I need to clean my glasses and proof read more carefully before clicking the send button … lol ;)

  • Unknown's avatar

Argh! I gave the actual size for the Misty Look template incorrect again. They give 806 X 189 to download. You must upload 760 X 190. I don’t expect perfection here, but a little effort not to be sloppy on the part of WordPress would be nice. It’s fine if each theme requires a different sized header, so long as they make sure to advise people of this BEFORE they go to upload the nifty header they spent all that time making! Do you see a bit more what I am saying?

  • Unknown's avatar

I understand you. Volunteers do not make these decisions. Staff do. I just wanted to make sure you understood that if you want to effect the changes that you articulate then you must contact staff.
    Best wishes :)

  • Unknown's avatar

I will contact support on this, I do think it needs some attention. It isn’t asking to much, for them to let people know before the upload page what the size needs to be for each theme. It also isn’t too large of an expectation, to think that the template they give you to download and customize will be the correct size for the appropriate theme. It does make me grouchy, because they can do better. And, wouldn’t you be aggravated, if confronted with the fact that the headerS you spent all that time getting “just so” are the wrong size, when there wasn’t anything to say so prior to the upload page?

  • Unknown's avatar

Good for you. Contacting staff is the way to go if you want action.

  • Unknown's avatar

Hmmm, didn’t notice that before. Iceburgg doesn’t show tags or catagories. Ah well… *sigh* Here’s my blog’s “Custom Header” catagory, since I did direct your attention that way. (They aren’t spectacular, but they’re mine, and I made ’em.)
