Heading and description format changed

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello,

For some reason my heading is not showing up correctly. The font is not right and it has a box around the description below. I haven’t touched it so I don’t understand why this would happen out of nowhere.

    Please advise.

    Thank you,

    Rick

    Hi there,

Are you still having a problem with your heading showing your font incorrectly?

I ask because I just went to your site and everything looks normal! Here is a screenshot of what I see:

    http://note.io/WHxSTR

Let me know if you’re still having issues!

    Hi,

I appreciate your reply. I’ve followed your lead and created a link to snapshot of what I’m seeing. I’m new to Evernote and Skitch, but no time like the present to learn. Forgive my ignorance, but I’m not sure how you got your shortened link above. I created the snapshot then did a share to get the url copied to the clipboard, and I got the url below. Anyway, please advise on that if you have the time.

As for the screenshot, I was seeing that same font in your screenshot in “The Fraudulent 5” heading yesterday, but today I’m seeing it correctly (as it’s always been displayed per my link below). But the box around the blog description is still there–and I’ve never seen that until yesterday. I don’t like it! It’s never been part of that template, so I hope that they have not made some kind of change that I cannot fix. It looked nice and clean before and now it’s got a boxy look which really takes away from the crisp look of the site right off the bat.

Note: Whomever designed that template did a magnificent job–it was perfect for what I wanted. And those wavy colors blending in on top ar just beautiful–and somewhat symbolic for the site itself. And then out of nowhere this box is wrapped around the heading and totally destroys the essence of that design aspect. No sound design work would have such a beautiful look like that and then throw a regular etch around some text that was already so sharply accented.

Also, one possible correction in my screenshot below–I highlighted the thicker etch that is not part of the rectangle (it’s above the “Wisdom Begins in Wonder” section. That edge is fine–I don’t remember if it was there before or not, but it’s perfectly fine. My concern is the inconsistency of “The Fraudulent 5” text and that etched box around the site description.

Thank you again for your time!

    Hi there,

Thanks so much for the screenshot!

Regarding the font, it looks like True Type, the company through which we are able to provide the additional fonts, might have been having some lagging issues. It was taking a while for your header to show up for me, however when it finally did, I was able to see the header font which was in your screenshot.

In regards to the border, if you look here:

    http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/spectrum/

You can see from the screen capture provided by the theme designer that this border is always intended to be there. It may be that it does not appear on some browsers, however that would be an exception rather than a rule.

You may be able to remove that section via CSS changes which you have access to because of your Custom Design, however that could be quite complicated! You would want to consult the CSS Forum which we have created for just this type of discussion right here:

    https://en.forums.wordpress.com/forum/css-customization

See if anyone else has asked a similar question, and if not you can describe it yourself!

  • Unknown's avatar

Thank you for your follow-up–very much appreciated! How can I contact the theme designer? I have checked 3 computers and 2 out of 3 have the same problem with that box. I have to admit that maybe the “transparent” box is throwing me off so much that maybe the filled-in header was always that way and I just don’t remember it. But one thing is for certain–something is going on here. Some kind of change has happened very recently, because I haven’t done anything on this site in over a year and it’s always been the same. And the idea it’s inconsistent and taking too long on your end–all of these indicators lead me to believe that the some change has been made to the design or site–something, I don’t know. As I said, I can accept that I maybe I’m wrong about that area being filled in, but this transparent box business is absolutely wrong. Thanks again for your help!!

    Hi there,

I wanted to reach out to you because this was taking so long.

I wanted to dig in a little further into your site and it appears that there is something strange going on with it. In some browsers it is showing correctly and in others it is not. It would show fine if you only viewed one post at a time, but if you viewed more than about 8 at a time then it would malfunction.

So in short, something strange is going on. I’ve got some of our developers looking at it, so don’t think we’re ignoring you! We’re trying to get things sorted out. I just had wanted my next message to you to be that it was fixed, but it’s taking longer than I had thought.

As soon as I have something to tell you, I will! :)

    Have a great night!

    Hi,

I must say, I am immensely impressed with your reply. It’s woven with professionalism, courtesy, concern, follow-through, teamwork, and it’s all rooted in a refreshing depth of intellectual curiosity. The irony is that had my target audience demonstrated even a fraction of the top-notch professionalism you have shown below, there would have been no website in the first place.

I have been writing a book on and off for several years, and I’ve come so far lately that I can finally see it truly coming to a close by the end of this year (or at least on the verge, anyway). Your email is a perfect illustration of excellence for the type of topics I address, so I’m going to use it as an example. :o)

Please thank your colleagues for me as well!

    Rick

    Hi Rick,

I came in this morning and found a message from one of the people who had been looking at your site.

She was able to track down what was causing the CSS to malfunction in the header and the background for some browsers. It turns out that there was some sort of corruption in one of the posts which you had made a few days ago (the post “Rain or Shine”).

The last couple of images, either in the very first place (on your computer) or when they were uploaded to the site became corrupted and caused all of this mess.

We’ve removed those images, so your site is now loading great on our end across all browsers (please check to make sure that it’s loading correctly for you!).

The question of your photos is still there though. The safest thing that I think you could do to make sure you get your photos back on to that post (assuming you want them there), is to first delete them off of your Media Library so that you don’t confuse the old ones with the new ones. You can do that by going to your account’s Dashboard and then to the Media Library link. Hover over the images which are missing from the Rain or Shine post (you can see the Rain or Shine post here: http://wp.me/p292vZ-8z), and click the Trash link.

Once they’ve been sent to the trash, go back to editing the Rain or Shine post and re-upload the images just one at a time. Once each one is up, republish the post and then view your entire site. Make sure it looks OK! That way you can be sure that nothing is getting messed up again in the process.

I hope all of this has made sense. If you have ANY questions at all, please don’t hesitate to respond back!

Also, thank you so much for your kind words in your last message!

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

I see which ones are missing because I got a “new post” email that has them all in there (I guess one of your developers was able to do that). In any case, I don’t see any change to the problem on my end–and I checked 2 computers. Secondly, maybe it’s just a misunderstanding on the date or something, but you mentioned the “Rain or Shine” post being a “few days ago.” I haven’t touched that section in about a year.

This thing has been flawless since I started it in January 2012, so it seems really strange that out of nowhere something like this would happen (within the last week I believe). Are you certain that nothing changed on WordPress around that time?

    Thanks!

    Rick

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi Rick,

You’re right! I was misreading the date for the post. That was my fault.

Given that it was such an older post, that does indeed change things just a bit. It means that the photos managed to get corrupted while on our servers (assuming that you have not made any changes to the post?).

While that is concerning, what I am concerned about is that you are saying is that you are not seeing any changes to the site.

Could you please upload a new screenshot to your Media Library and post a link here? Please include your entire page (and don’t use any of the markings from skitch, if you would!).

    Thank you!

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

No worries, honest mistake on the date confusion. :o) And no, I have not made any changes at all in many months–except for possibly a change in wording or something (which is unrelated to that section of pictures anyway).

Per your request, here is an unmarked screenshot of what I’m seeing on 2 computers:

    Thanks,

    Hi Rick,

Could you get the whole page for me? Get down further into the posts and up on the URL bar? I want to see if some of the other weird behavior we were noticing is still happening with you.

Also, what browser and version and operating system are you using?

    Thank you again!

  • Unknown's avatar

Sorry about that–I knew you mentioned the entire site and then it slipped my mind when I went to make the screenshot.

    Hi Rick,

For some reason the screenshot which you sent doesn’t seem to have been uploaded right to Evernote. Here’s what I see:

    http://note.io/ZGpvDd

  • Unknown's avatar

Also, so you know, a good portion of the office is out today and through the weekend, so if you don’t hear back until Monday, that will be why!

I just wanted you to know.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

Sorry about the screenshot–not sure what happened there. Before I understood where to submit a help request online, I sent an email to help@wordpress.com. After I didn’t hear back at first, I went to the forum and posted there. Anyway, just wanted to make that clear so that you didn’t think I had lost confidence in you. ;o) Anyway, Ben contacted me and we had a few email exchanges as well (and I filled him on on our exchanges).

The first link below is a summary of screenshots for where we are now. As you will see, I finally found a screenshot for the correct version. As I mentioned before, that etched border threw me off so much that I didn’t remember there being a white background–but you were right, there was (which I came around to agreeing to). In any case, I just feel better that I found the original so we can all see what it’s supposed to look like. The second link is to follow up on your request for the full site (I hope the link works this time). And below the second link is the most recent exchange between Ben and me. He came up with a suitable workaround for now, and he had identified the bug.

Also, I appreciate the follow-up on the weekend deal. I cannot say enough good things about your support!! Please let me know your thoughts on the bug he has identified, but no hurry. :o)

Below is the most recent exchange:

    Hi, Ben.

Sure, that will be fine for now. I’d like to see it fixed because the original looks better, but at least it doesn’t have that etched border around it anymore–that looks awful! By the way, how did you get rid of that border? I suspect that must have been a coding change?

Any idea how long it will be before the bug is fixed? I’m just curious–I’m not going to hold you to anything. ;o)

Thanks again for all your help!!

    Rick

    > The font for the website title was showing correctly earlier today, so that default change is not correct. Secondly, I could see something breaking if it were that way from the beginning, but I always had that many posts on the page. For this type of site, I want everything to be on one page only–and all that worked perfectly until sometime within the last week.

    Hi Rick,

Ok sorry about breaking your title font there. Thanks for fixing it.

I think the issue with the background colour is happening as a result of a bug in the webkit rendering engine. I have identified the bug and created test cases for it. This means that the bug will happen in Chrome and Safari browser which use the webkit engine.

If you look in Firefox for example you can see that it is not broken.

This has not happened as a result of changes made on WordPress.com, it will have happened from an automatic update to your browser. I will be reporting the bug to webkit to help them to fix it, but I unfortunately it’s out of my hands to fix – we’ll have to wait until the developers for the webkit engine fix it.

In the meantime I have put in a workaround – there used to be a white border around this box. By removing this border, the background now shows! I hope this is a satisfactory solution for now.

Please let me know if you have any more questions.

    Best,

    Ben | Happiness Engineer | WordPress.com

Can you please try the following steps?

    1. Clear your browser cache
    2. View http://fraudulent5.com/

Does the display still look off to you after that? If yes, can you please try these steps as well?

    1. Go to the Posts section in your dashboard and find the “Rain or Shine” post
    2. Change the post status to “Draft” and save changes (you can change it back after the test)
    3. Clear your browser cache
    4. View http://fraudulent5.com/

Does the display still look off to you after that?

I tested http://fraudulent5.com/ Chrome 25, Firefox 19.0.2, and Safari 6.0.2 without any display problems after the “Rain or Shine” post was modified.

Note: I was the one that modified the post before. Apologies for doing it without checking with you first. It did seem like a clear problem to me and I did test the solution and the home page was fixed for every browser I tested with on my Mac after making the change. Also, note that you can review all changes to posts any time by looking at the post revisions.

Here is what I currently see for http://fraudulent5.com/ using Chrome 25:

    Hi, Designsimply.

No worries on the post modification–I’m just I got a “new post” email that had all the pictures in it so I could compare. Just out of curiosity, how did you get that to register as “new post” so I’d get the original before removing the pics?

Anyway, I tried your steps above but to no avail. Appreciate the ongoing effort though! :o)

  • Unknown's avatar

Just out of curiosity, how did you get that to register as “new post” so I’d get the original before removing the pics

I didn’t. I’m not sure why that happened actually. Can you tell me the exact date/time for that email?

Anyway, I tried your steps above but to no avail. Appreciate the ongoing effort though! :o)

Thanks for testing. I can still see the “Rain or Shine” post. Did you re-publish it after the 2nd set of steps? No problem if you did, I just want to check that you removed the post and checked to make sure it was gone after reloading http://fraudulent5.com/

I’ll see if can find someone to help test IE9 since I am traveling right now and don’t have access to Windows at the moment.

It kind of sounds to me like the issue was fixed by the content change in the “Rain or Shine” post and you are looking at a cached version of the home page—but you should have already tested against that by changing the “Rain or Shine” post to a draft and confirming it did not appear on the home page.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

Below is a screenshot of the email header about the new post. Yes, I republished “Rain or Shine” after I followed your steps.

Yeah, it looks like it’s working fine on IE 8 now, so something is definitely wrong on IE 9.
