Heic format

Will WordPress make it possible in the near future to directly import photos in Heic format? I don’t want to convert formats every time I want to upload media… thanks!

Hi there, I had to look this up. :)
My gut feeling is that WordPress in general will continue to support cross-platform image extensions and since HEIC is Apple specific, if it does happen, it will happen first in the WordPress (org) software which our platform is based on.
Having said that, I’m only a volunteer, so I’ve also flagged this thread for Staff input. Perhaps they can direct you to any relevant discussions on ORG. Thanks for your patience while they get back to you.

Hi there,
The problem with .HEIC, as @justjennifer points out above, is that it’s Apple-specific, so if you upload .HEIC photos to your site, we’ll need to convert it to JPG for anyone trying to view your site on a non-Apple device. So conversion will have to take place, if not on your end, then on ours.
Which doesn’t mean we won’t do it. But it’s a somewhat bigger change that just adding a file extension to a list of allowed file types :)
So while it will probably happen in the future, that future might not be as near as you’d like it to be. I’ve added your request to our internal tracker, though – the more people want support for this type of file, the more likely that work on this will become prioritised.
And it may or may not have to happen in Core first, but I’m can’t find any open Core tickets regarding that. A quick search of the WordPress.org forums tell me that people who want to use .HEIC images there use plugins to add support for it.

Thank you both, for these very informative answers! I guess I know what to do in the meantime then: switch my iPhone settings to JPG if I want an easy upload to WordPress. Thanks again for your prompt replies.
