height & width attributes to images so pages load faster?

I had this email from a friend who won’t look at my blog!

I’m afraid I’ve not read it properly – I’m too impatient.

I think this is exacerbated by the fact I’m on a dial-up connection, which slows things down – but I do find it difficult to read. The problem is that I start to scroll down the text and suddenly find the browser has jumped back up the page again. It happens as it starts to load each new picture – which then pushes all the text down to make space. If I had a faster connection, the pictures would load faster than I was reading, so it probably wouldn’t be a problem. Anyway, I shall make this constructive criticism by offering a solution – if you add height and width attributes to your img tags, the browser should reserve the space it needs for the pictures right from the start, then, as each picture loads it can slot it into its alloted space without having to rearrange the page.

Even with 2mb broadband I have this problem. My blogs are image-based. Is there a way to solve this issue?

    eg in Quentin.

Limit the number of posts displayed per page to say 5 (settings > reading).

Optimize your images before uploading them: http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/05/08/optimise-your-images/ .

  • lovedubs: if you use the new image uploader to insert images in your posts (even ones uploaded previously), the images will automatically be scaled down as appropriate, reducing the download size.

The images you are uploading are quite large files for their dimensions (133kb for a 400×257 jpeg for example). Try selecting a lower quality setting when you create your images – at that size you probably won’t be able to tell the difference between high quality and moderate quality, but the difference in file size could be a factor of 3 or 4.
