Hi threekidsandahusband,
You could add the ‘Follow Blog’ widget or the ‘Follow Button’ widget to your sidebar.
You can find both widgets on the Appearance → Widgets screen in your Dashboard.

I located it, tested it, and it is working.
Your followers can subscribe to receive your posts by email and they alone can control the frequency of receipt. You cannot subscribe for them or control the frequency of receipt of your posts by them.
If you would like a follow button to appear on the bottom right hand corner of your site for those who do not have WordPress.com accounts go to > Settings > Reading and scroll down to Follower Settings:
These settings change emails sent from your blog to followers.
Logged out users __ Show follow button to logged out users.Checking this will present a follow button to logged out users in the bottom corner of their screen.

We have a subscription shortcode that you can make use of. The help page on it is right here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/blog-subscription-shortcode/ You can also include the subscription shortcode at the end of every post you publish.

I very much appreciate the help I received. When someone suggested I write a Blog about my life past and present I was both intrigued and intimidated. I have filled countless journals and believe strongly that having that outlet kept my feet on the ground. I would sometimes let a friend read them, when she pointed out that each time I was faced with a trauma I either sought out others who had gone through something similar or felt guilt for wishing I could find someone who understood. Guilt because finding someone else who’s world had been torn apart meant that someone else had felt what my heart was feeling. A blog would help those people searching not only for someone who had found the strength to rebuild life, but for others who want to support a friend or others who look at their children and can’t imagine having to ever deal with a monster like cancer. I find it confusing that on one day I had 146 views other days 3 or 10. What did I do on that day that brought so many viewers. I know it will take time to learn everything. I am surprised at how uplifting it is when you see that someone is following you. Again thank you so very much. I look forward to what everyone has to write about.

@threekidsandahusband The widgets look good. You could move one or both of them to the top of the sidebar if you want more exposure.
Also, on the ‘Follow Button’ widget you have ‘Show blog name’ and ‘Show follower count’ checked, but the width of your sidebar isn’t wide enough to show both. I would uncheck one of those boxes.
