How big is a website isn’t the question, it is how big is the monitor of each of the hundreds of millions of web users out there. Displays can run from about 320px wide (small smart phones) to as much as 2560px wide like the 30″ monitor I have.
You can’t try and cover the worst case 2500+ because your file size would be huge even at the very lowest JPG quality and that means a very slow loading site.
If you plan on 1500px x 1000px, that would cover the majority of monitors and then set a background color in addition to the image that is complementary to the image. And keep the file size on your image under 200k maximum, and 250k would be even better.
