Hi @napolesj, the Pro plan supports FTP as well as your own JS:
https://wordpress.com/support/code/If you don’t want to pay for that, let us know what kind of feature you’re adding to the site — perhaps we’ve got another option.

I wanted to make a website where I can show my programs. I tried to embed jdoodle compiler so I can show my Java programs and maybe show other programs I am working on as well. I tried this using the HTML option and in the preview it works but when I save and go to the website only a link to jdoodle shows up. I wanted a website that could be like a resume portfolio that I can show my projects.

Similar to the OP we do not allow certain kinds of code on WordPress.com unless you have upgraded to our Pro Plan: https://wordpress.com/support/code/
For security reasons we remove any code that is not permitted, so it may show temporarily in the editor when you are composing your page/post, but when you publish the content the code is not rendered.
If you wish you can upgrade to the Pro Plan here: https://wordpress.com/pricing/
If cost is an issue you may wish to consider instead setting up a self-hosted WordPress site, which are sites that you create on a “traditional web host” like Bluehost, GoDaddy, etc. This type of WordPress site uses the free open-source version of the platform and would allow you to run any code you wish.
