Help!

New subscriber and thoroughly confused about what is WP, what is Blue Host etc…but bottom line is 1) I cannot get the widget ‘Blog’ subscription to function on my site: http://www.nomad-steve.com It shows up – but the subscribe button is grayed out and will not function. 2) I keep setting up comments for NO moderation and it keeps reverting to having me approve them

  • Hi there,

Let me see if I can clear things up for you :)

WordPress is the name of the software used to power your website. That software it maintained by a community of volunteers over at WordPress.org.

Bluehost is a hosting provider for that software, and so is WordPress.com. Your site is hosted by Bluehost, in other words, it’s on their servers, and they control how it works.

You also see your site here with us in your WordPress.com account, because you have that site connected to this account via a plugin called Jetpack. That plugin allows you to manage the site via your WordPress.com account, and also adds some WordPress.com features to the site, like our subscription service and stats.

    So all that said…

    1) I cannot get the widget ‘Blog’ subscription to function on my site: http://www.nomad-steve.com It shows up – but the subscribe button is grayed out and will not function.

The subscriptions module in Jetpack is active on your site, so I’m not sure why the widget won’t work. Can you try deleting it from the site and adding a new one?

    2) I keep setting up comments for NO moderation and it keeps reverting to having me approve them

When you say revert, do you mean the setting turns itself back on? Are you looking at https://wordpress.com/settings/discussion/nomad-steve.com (currently shows moderation disabled for me), or http://nomad-steve.com/wp-admin/options-discussion.php?

Or are the settings themselves both fine on those two pages, but comments end up waiting for approval anyway?

Hey – thanks for the response and the great overview – yes was and remains a bit confusing for a new blogger. Seems I have similar options on both (the actual BH board and the WP board) dashboards and when I do something on one dashboard it doesn’t necessarily impact the site so I go to the other Any chance you (or anyone) has a contact # for wordpress? The # I have just went to voicemail. I’d like to sign up for support.

As for the “subscribe” button – I called BH and they said the same thing: “it should work….no idea why it doesn’t…sorry…” Yes I have deleted, reinstalled about 10 times. It shows up, looks good but doesn’t work. Frustrating. I just want to talk to somebody who can help.

And yes – I have now set the discussion settings to “no moderation” 2x and saved and both times a new comment comes in and it requires my approval. I dont know how to fix this either.

Also – I just apparently called a wordpress.org help line – and when I was not able to fully understand the difference between service offered by WP.org and WP.com he sighed and hung up on me. Needless to say my experience thus far – except for your response – has sucked.

  • Also – I just apparently called a wordpress.org help line

Neither WordPress.com nor WordPress.org has a phone support line.

There is a scam company out there that claims to be WordPress phone support, but they have absolutely no affiliation with WordPress.com or WordPress.org.

You can reach WordPress.org’s support at https://wordpress.org/support/forums/ and WordPress.com’s support at https://wordpress.com/help/contact

Both options are free, and again neither organization offers phone support.

In your case, I recommend posting at https://wordpress.org/support/forum/how-to-and-troubleshooting/#new-topic-0 and if you don’t already have an account at WordPress.org, you’ll need to register for one there to post.

Again, to clear up any confusion, WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two different entities: https://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

Thank you. I ended up purchasing a support subscription from Bluehost and they seem legit. Spent quite a bit of time working with me on screenshare. Not fixed yet – but I feel decent about it.

  • Glad you’ve got that. Cheers!
