HELP – Advertising options
-
Hi – I am relatively new to blogging, I created my blog with WP.com two weeks ago. Traffic numbers continue to climb every day and yesterday was approached by a local (I am Australian) online store which is related to my target market about my advertising options. So I have a few questions:
– Can have an advertisement on my WP.com blog?
– If so does anyone have any more info on how to do it?
– If not – if i transfer my blog to WP.org is advertising allowed?
– Does anyone have any advice – should I remain at WP.com (with no ads – and continue to build my traffic numbers) or go to the extra effort of transferring to WP.org so that I can advertise?Sorry for all the questions I am quite confused and not sure what I should do?

You are allowed a total of one descret text link that may include an affliate link as well as one donation link to a service like paypal. Banners and the like are not allowed.
wp.org doesn’t do hosting but that’s where you get the software from.
As to which is better, it’s pretty much up to you. if advertsiing is that important to you and you feel comfortable with the software and installing and upgrading and all that, it’s up to you.

(1) Generally speaking wordpress.com blogs are non-commercial blogs. WordPress.com blogs cannot be used to conduct business transactions and/or to drive traffic to commercial sites. Advertising is restricted. Only a single discrete affiliate link is allowed either on the About page or in the sidebar.
(2) The two important threads to take note of when it comes to “business blogs” are found here http://wordpress.com/tos/ (particularly take note of the paragraph in purple) and here http://faq.wordpress.com/2005/12/08/adsense/
If you require clarification on specifics be sure to contact Mark in support through a feedback (button on top right hand corner of any blog page) or by sending an email to support at this domain.
(3) Yes you can advertise and conduct business transactions on a wordpress.org blog but wordpress will not host your blog. You can either self host or hire a webhost and download a free wordpress.org blog from http://wordpress.org that runs on different software than wordpress.com blogs do. The differences between wordpress.com blogs hosted by wordpress and those hosted elsewhere are laid out in this thread https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic.php?id=3700

Thanks very much for your help – can I just clarify something (this may seem like a really silly question), if I offer an affiliate link to a vendor would I need to charge them for the space I am providing or is it sort of a “mutual agreement” where I am just recommending this site to my readers?

We can’t advise you on what kinds of deals to make with your one for-profit link. Thats’ between you and them.

I’m not staff so I can’t say for certain, but if wordpress.com finds out you’re charging for any link on your blog, it’s quite likely that your blog would be deleted.
With most affiliate links, you’re making commission on any sales the site gets as a result of clicks from your blog. Any kind of upfront payment for the link itself puts you on risky territory. But, again, I’m not staff so you would really need to run this by support through email or feedback.
