Help backup and restore an old theme

  • Unknown's avatar

hi there, I have two blogs – the new one (BookLV) and an old one (digitalageit, setup years ago), I realize that the theme I used for my old blog which is called Notepad, is no longer available today. So I got stuck in these 2 options, neither do I have answer.

    1. Is there a way to backup/restore NotePad theme, put it on the new blog?
    2. If not, I plan to delete the new blog – bookLV, then change the old blog name to BookLV, this way to keep the blog with existing theme, but I am afraid I can no longer register this name that I own.

fyi the nice theme that no longer support today is – https://digitalageit.wordpress.com/

and basically I am working on put this them to –
    https://BookLV.wordpress.com/

What should I do? Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Rick,

It’s not possible to activate a retired theme (such as Notepad) on new sites.

If you’d like to use it then the best approach is to change the site address for digitalageit.wordpress.com. Although you wouldn’t be able to change the address to booklv.wordpress.com, you could consider a similar variation of the name.

It’s worth noting, also, that the decision to retire Notepad came about as it’s an older theme that doesn’t adapt based on the size of the screen it’s being viewed on.

I’d be happy to suggest some more up-to-date themes in our repository, if you let me know a little about the features you particularly like from Notepad and what your site’s going to be about.

Lovecraft and Button are two examples of free, two column themes that you may be interested in.

Let me know if that’s helpful or if you have any other concerns.

    Thanks!

Thank you siobhyb for your kind help !

Yes I like the Button theme, I will give it a try. I am fairly new to the new wordpress.com configuration, at this point I got lost on two different back-end control panels, it looks like they have overlap functionality.

    https://booklv.wordpress.com/wp-admin/
    https://wordpress.com/stats/insights/booklv.wordpress.com

I like the NotePad theme because I am looking for an as simple as possible theme for blogging with almost no picture/gif/social media but words, and I’d like to use as more screen estate as possible with just notes. In another word, least Bells and whistles if possible.

My understanding is, that if I delete the booklv.wordpress.com, the name is no longer available to register anymore? is that correct? thanks to confirm.

If so I’d like to keep that name. But if booklv is like a “domain name”, then I do hope to remove it, then immediately go to digitalageit and rename it to booklv.

My trouble is, that I am really no long need digitalageit but it has the theme, I need booklv but I can’t get a theme like NotePad I like.

Hope you have a great day.

    Hi Rick,

I am fairly new to the new wordpress.com configuration, at this point I got lost on two different back-end control panels, it looks like they have overlap functionality.

The admin area that you accessed by adding /wp-admin to the end of your site’s URL is our older admin area. You’re right that the same functionality has been carried over to our newer interface, which you can access by navigating WordPress.com directly.

As you build your site, you may notice some functionality that’s currently missing from our newer interface and only available in /wp-admin. We’re in a period of transition and working to get all key functionality moved over.

We have some more background to why we introduced a newer interface and the benefits it brings here:

I like the NotePad theme because I am looking for an as simple as possible theme for blogging with almost no picture/gif/social media but words, and I’d like to use as more screen estate as possible with just notes. In another word, least Bells and whistles if possible.

Button is a good, clean, and minimal theme that may work for your needs. You can also explicitly filter our repository for themes tagged “minimal” here:

    https://wordpress.com/themes/filter/minimal/type/free/

Some particular favourites of mine from that list include Penscratch, Twenty Fifteen, and Kelly. As theme choice is very much down to personal preference, I encourage you to have a browse about and experiment.

It’s also worth noting that all of the suggested themes are designed to adapt based on the size of the screen they’re being viewed on (unlike Notepad.) They therefore provide a better experience to those viewing your site on mobile.

My understanding is, that if I delete the booklv.wordpress.com, the name is no longer available to register anymore? is that correct? thanks to confirm.

That is correct. You will not be able to re-use the booklv.wordpress.com site address if you delete that site. You have the following options:

    1. Change the name of digitalageit.wordpress.com to a different variation of booklv.wordpress.com e.g. booklvblog.wordpress.com.
    2. Choose a different theme for booklv.wordpress.com based on the above suggestions.

Hope that’s clear! I’m right here if extra questions come up, too.
