HELP! Brand new to this – struggling – just don't get it

    Hi everyone,

I’m brand new to this and admit I’m struggling mightily with it being much harder than I thought to get things going.

I created a site with the wizard, it started with a stock theme. Before doing anything else, I found and applied a different theme (Rebalance). But my page doesn’t look like the theme page example at all. Didn’t really notice a difference from the original stock theme it gave me (can’t remember which that was). That’s disappointing. What exactly is the theme supposed to do?

No matter, I’ll try to start adding content. Under the theme’s “info” page, it says it’s using featured content and portfolio stuff. I have featured content enabled. I created a portfolio page/project, applied the featured tag I used earlier. Saved everything.

But nothing on my home page is changing. The featured content isn’t in the featured content section. If I switch to the portfolio template, the new portfolio project/page doesn’t show up.

It doesn’t seem like anything I’m doing is changing any of the stock stuff on the home page. Looks like I could manually delete the stuff on the stock home page, but I thought that the portfolio section of the themed home page would update when I created a portfolio project?

Seems like I’m just spinning my wheels because I’m fundamentally missing how this stuff is supposed to work.

    Any hints?

All my stuff is currently just a draft. Don’t want to publish it before I’ve got some content. Have tried publishing it to see if it was waiting for that to apply changes, but nope, it just published the stock page. So I went back to draft.

    Hi,

What’s address (URL) of the site you’re referring to?

I found and applied a different theme (Rebalance). But my page doesn’t look like the theme page example at all.

That’s normal. For most themes it is necessary to build various features of the theme, according to instructions found in the corresponding theme guide, in order to have a site resemble the theme demo. Here’s the Rebalance theme guide.

    I have featured content enabled.

I’m not aware that using the featured content feature requires that it be enabled. Where and how did you enable it?

How to set up the featured content area in the Rebalance theme is described in the Featured Content section of the Rebalance theme guide. If the featured content item isn’t displaying on your site, then you might have missed one or more steps in the process.

If I switch to the portfolio template, the new portfolio project/page doesn’t show up.

Please provide here the address of a page with the portfolio page template assigned.

I thought that the portfolio section of the themed home page would update when I created a portfolio project?

It will, if you have a static front page with either portfolio shortcode in the content or the portfolio page template assigned.

All my stuff is currently just a draft.

That’s fine, but volunteers such as myself can’t view draft pages, posts, or portfolio projects. Therefore I’ve called for staff attention.

  • Hi there,

    I assume you’re speaking of https://jamesseddonauthor.wordpress.com/?

That site is using Rebalance. But it has no published content, and you’ve not followed the theme’s setup instructions to set it up yet. A theme is made to display your content, so it won’t look like the demo if you don’t yet have any content to display.

You can find the setup instructions for Rebalance here:

    That is the problem.

Publish your content, and it will appear on your site. But if it’s draft, it technically doesn’t exist yet, and your site cannot display content that does not exist.
