HELP! Can't Customize any theme!

I am extremely new to WordPress and I have just recently started my photography portfolio. I have noticed that when I download a theme, you are supposed to be able to click customize and a live preview of your website will appear with a left sidebar with what I think is supposed to be drop down option thingy’s to let you ‘customize.’ I see the tiny downward arrow marking that a drop down menu is there, but when I click on it, nothing happens. I have tried this with dozens of themes and I’ve tried researching this and it just isn’t working!
I am using the theme “Arcade Basic.” My website is http://www.jessicharms.com/ <= Not sure if that helps at all.
I really need help with this and as I said I am EXTREMELY new to WordPress so I don’t know anything about the style sheets or any of the coding stuff. Thanks for your help!

Just for clarification, WordPress comes in different flavors.
