Help! Can't delete a Category
-
*First time using WordPress* . I’ve tried looking it up via YouTube, tried making a test blog to see if I could delete a category but can’t. When looking via YouTube it looks like some older version and doesn’t give me the option to ‘edit’ or ‘delete’. I tried to read other responses from FAQ as well and still doesn’t show up as my screen does. I rather just delete all categories and place everything under the default ‘uncategorized’ for now until I get the hang of things. I would like a step by step directions of how to delete if possible.
-
The one time I encountered this as well, I found that I did not have the one post deleted or taken out of the category.
You can’t delete a category when a post is still linked to it.Find your post and put it in a different category or delete only than can you delete your category.

I am in a similar issue to astewart3289.
I have used the self-hosted version of WordPress (on version 4.4) before and have used Posts > Categories to delete categories. All of the tutorials are consistent with this interface.
On a site on WordPress.com, there is no Posts > Categories interface. I have no posts, so no categories are currently in use. There is no Bulk Action, there is no “delete category” when in a post draft mode.
How are categories deleted in the WordPress.com version of the software that is currently live?

Nevermind. I did not realize that the interface that is available when just browsing the site (url.wordpress.com) is not the full dashboard. I was able to access the full dashboard by going to url.wordpress.com/wp-admin.

*To: Beermonkeygaming…. How do I get to the full dashboard? That link doesn’t work for me… From WordPress.com — do I have yo upload another App or something? I tried from my IPad and laptop to see if views are different and they aren’t unfortunately…
*To: RantingCrow…. I permanently deleted my test blog and that didn’t work! I literally haven’t posted any blogs up as of yet and when I tried to update the “Parent” category it than created a Child one … So 2 categories I don’t want persay– so no blog is posted/linked to it.
*I literally want to start from scratch without having to recreate another default name or more likely take care of these unwanted categories by deleting them

Hi astewart3289,
First thing after you log into your account is to select the blog you want to edit, then click on the WP Admin tab on the sidebar.
Once in the WP Admin dashboard, on the sidebar, mouse over “posts” and choose “categories.”
From there you should be able to add or delete categories as you choose.
Hope that helps!

I literally Do Not have a blog written/posted … The post one and only post that I did have as a Test Blog I have deleted permanently a long time ago.
🔴 I will try to make another test blog and see if that works…

You can reach your admin dashboard by going to your blog.wordpress.com/wp-admin
Or log into your account, click on the “my sites” tab in the top left corner, choose the site you want to work on, then on the sidebar scroll down and click on WP Admin (it’s on the bottom of the sidebar).

This is what I see when I log in on the left side
After selecting “My Site” this is what I see on the left side in order using asterisks :
*the name of my site along with my default link that my blog page would appear on
*Stats
*Plans (a free website vs Preminum vs Business)
*Under “Publish”
– “Blog Posts”
– “Pages”
*Under “Personalize”
-Themes
-menus
*Under “configure”
– “Sharing”
– “People”
– “Pluggings”
– “Domains”
– “Settings”————————– This is exactly what’s on my page and I only have one site that shows under the 1st asterisk. So I believe I’m followed your direction but after hitting “my site” doesn’t give me the same options that you receive . Too bad I can’t add a photo to this forum be it’d be way easier to see what I see
