help-can't find our where to edit my home page

this is a blog, not a page, so it’s not listed in my “all pages” I have a big white square and would love to be able to edit it

You are using the Structure theme, which has a specialized front page. It will use featured images to highlight an image on the front page. By default, it will use the featured image from the latest post and the image must be at least 620 x 380 pixels to work.
Here is a help page showing how to setup featured images:

Unfortunately I have no idea where my “home” page resides, thus I cannot “Open the editor of the post or page where you want to display a unique custom header image, and locate the Featured Image module in the bottom right corner under Page Attributes.”
It is not listed in “pages” or “all pages” and I cannot locate it anywhere on my “dashboard”. When I go directly to the url http://www.alalafitwomen.wordpress.com it opens to this “home” page, and when I scroll down to the bottom right hand corner, Page Attributes is not there. So, I would be eternally grateful if you could direct me to where I can find it! -
What you have as your home page now is not actually a page, but a collection of your most recent posts.
The big square in Structured is a featured image spot, which displays the featured images assigned to the most recent post in your featured category (set at Appearance -> Theme Options) in your Dashboard.

so based on all of this, I went back to my last post, edit mode, added an image and checked off make this my featured image and published it. it shows up on the post, but the big white square is still on the home page.
I also went to Appearance/Theme Options/ have checked and unchecked “show the set feature image on single posts” and still a big whitesquare

The front page featured post for Structure works using the “Featured Category” option in the theme options page: https://alalafitwomen.wordpress.com/wp-admin/themes.php?page=theme_options
It takes the featured image either from the most recent post or from the latest post in the featured category you select. There is also a size requirement. The image must be at least 620 x 380 pixels to work as the front page featured post in Structure.
Right now, your theme options have the latest post selected, but your latest post does not have a featured image that is at least 620 x 380 pixels: https://alalafitwomen.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=78&action=edit
If you add a featured image that is larger than 620 x 380 pixels to the latest post, it will use that as the image for the front page featured post.
