Help changing colors on Nav bars

Attempting changes in my navigation bar background colors and wanted to know where I go to find what the color numbers equal. Here’s a sample:
background:#498 url(‘images/nav.png’) repeat-x;
Where might a fumbling newbie find “images/nav.png” files with pretty colors connected to the numbers?

Also, whenever you see a three-digit hex color code, it is sort of a shorthand.
#498 would expand to #449988.
