Help figuring out how to do a major site overhaul

  • Unknown's avatar

I am planning a major overhaul of my website that is going to take me a couple of week’s work to complete. I’ve been putting it off for over a year since WordPress unceremoniously destroyed the website by making my theme obsolete, requiring me to put up something that simply works rather than what I want. Obviously, I don’t want the website down or in a state of disarray the whole time, so the obvious answer that it’s ASTOUNDING WordPress doesn’t offer even to people paying for plans is to set up a staging site to work on. However, since apparently WordPress HATES it’s customers, that’s not an option I have available to me using WordPress. (WordPress is very lucky that I HATE working on technical things and I’m using WooCommerce or I’d move everything to the much easier to use Wix today. And wouldn’t the loss of my $33/a month just devastate them?)

Anyways, my question is what easy options are available to me that would allow me to copy my current site (or import it if that’s the way to go) and work on it using the wordpress theme I’ve chosen? Or should I just suck it up and move my site to a CMS platform that doesn’t require completing coursework in IT to use. (And for the record, I’m in Mensa – in case anyone needs an indicator of just how user-unfriendly wordpress has become.)

Please and thank you for any help/direction I can get. Sorry for being crabby.
