Help for begginers

    Hello,

As many I am new in this thing of blogging. I downloaded worldpress but so far I managed with the online posting, uploading of photos, etc.

Now, my question may seem VERY stupid to many of you but here we go: What is worldpress.zip for? I believe it is to edit your blog offline and later update it…sort off…It seems to me that it would optimize a bit the time that takes to upload photos, posts, edit the page with extra features, etc. My problem is that my Internet connection is not permanent (I work in the Sahara and Tripoli) and my time to read online how to deal with this is limited.

For example: the readme file of the worldpress file states that I should open wp-config-sample.php, edit it manually with “database connection details”…jeez, what is that?; later in the so called instructions says “upload everything”, How? where?

I hope someone out there will be kind enough to explain this to me or at least give me a sort of “worldpress manual for dummies” link. I want to learn how to use this before I start with the CCS customization or start buying softwares available to help us with this, in short I would like your help to start learning how to deal with worldpress myself to start with, later I may spend some money.

hmm, is it me or perhaps you’re confused with wp.com and wp.org?

your username shows a link to a wp.com blog. all wp.com blogs do not need any installation, everything is done for us and all we have to do is customise the blog. wp.com bloggers are hosted by wordpress themselves.

if you have downloaded a wp blog, it is meant for bloggers who want to use wordpress themes in their self-hosted blog. if you have your own host, then you don’t have to sign up for the wp.com blog.

read the sticky at the forum for some more information.

I note that you’ve just started bloggin on wp.com, so congratulations on finding us!

First, the good news. You don’t need the wordpress.zip file at all. Blogging on wp.com is all about the blogging without having to worry about databases, configs, connection details or anything like that. You’re already up and running.

Now the bad news. The customisation here on wp.com is fairly limited. To be able to modify themes you need to purchase the CSS upgrade through your dashboard. You can then modify the theme CSS (but not the HTML) to your heart’s content.

My first suggestion to you is to read through the threads on this very forum which will get you some useful information. Next have a read through the FAQ at http://faq.wordpress.com (note there’s no L). After that, just come back and ask the questions you want answered. We’re (usually) friendly round here and can answer the simple stuff. You’ll note that most of us are just willing volunteers, so occasionally we’ll ask that you send in feedback.

    Hope this helps!

    Collin

Thank for your help, that explains all, so everything is online nowadays…seems that there was a migration from wordpress.org to *.com (sort of).

Any means to edit the blog (i.e. publish posts, edit the existing theme, etc., etc.) offline? What would be ideal is that I can make all the posts, include photos, etc. later upload it and check how it looks like…I have done it with my blogs in goggle (sorry, I use the competition also)…but wordpress seems more “professional” to me.

I will buy the famous CCS editor and start burning my head how to deal with it, in the meantime if the above have any answer well…that would be mostly appreciatted…

    Best regards

    Jose

Well, you can get a few offline posting applications. Timethief along with a few others use an application called Blog Desk which I am told works quite well.

The CSS side is a little more complicated though. I don’t think there’s a way that you can do this offline. SBK or Engtech may well be along and tell us different though!
